Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4.  
  5. On 4WD models, remove the axle shaft.
  6.  
  7. Remove the disc brake caliper. See Brakes for additional service information.
  8.  


CAUTION
Brake linings may contain asbestos. Asbestos is a known cancer-causing agent. When working on brakes, remember that the dust which accumulates on the brake parts may contain asbestos. Always wear a protective face covering, such as a painter's mask, when working on the brakes. NEVER blow the dust from the brakes or drum! There are solvents made for the purpose of cleaning brake parts. Use them!

  1. Remove the knuckle-to-ball joint cotter pins and nuts.
  2.  
  3. Drive the knuckle out with a brass hammer.
  4.

To install:

A split ring seat is located in the bottom of the knuckle. During installation, this ring seat must be set to a depth of 0.20 in. (5.23mm). Measure the depth to the top of the ring seat.

  1. Position the knuckle on the vehicle. Tighten the knuckle retaining nuts to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm). Use new cotter pins to secure the nuts.
  2.  
  3. Install the brake caliper. Tighten the disc brake caliper bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
  4.  
  5. If applicable, install the axle shaft.
  6.  
  7. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
