DANA 30, 35, 44 & 8 1 / 4 IN. AXLE

Dana model 30 drive axles can be identified by an ID plate attached to the right side of the cover housing. The information tag includes ring and pinion gear, production date and manufacturer's ID.
Gear ratio for the Dana 30 axle can be computed by dividing the number of teeth on the ring gear (the larger number) by the number of teeth on the pinion gear. Both numbers are provided on the ID plate.
If the ID plate cannot be located, the rear cover can be removed in order to count the teeth.
Dana model 35, 44 and 8 1 / 4 in. drive axles can be identified by a tag located on the left side of the housing cover. The tag lists part number and gear ratio. The production date and manufacturer's ID are stamped into the right side axle shaft.
AMC 7 9 / 16 IN.

The ID code for the AMC 7 9 / 16 in. axle is stamped in the right side axle tube boss. Code "S'' indicates a 3.73:1 ratio. Code "T'' indicates a 3.31:1 ratio. Code "SS'' or "TT'' indicates the rear axle has a Trac-Lok® differential.
181 FBI, 194 RBI & 216 RBA AXLE
181 Front Beam-design Iron (FBI), 194 Rear Beam-design Iron (RBI) and 216 Rear Beam-design Aluminum (RBA) drive axles can be identified by an ID tag attached to the differential housing cover by a cover bolt. The ID tag includes assembly part numbers and gear ratio information. Manufacturing date identification codes are stamped onto the differential cover side of the axle shaft tube.
All 4WD Cherokee and Grand Cherokee models for 1997-98 are equipped with the 181 FBI drive axle.
All Cherokee models for 1997-98 are equipped with the 194 RBI drive axle.
Grand Cherokee models for 1997-98 are equipped with either the 194 RBI or 216 RBA drive axles.
