Fig. Fig. 3: Oversized/undersized component code location for the 2.5L engine

The serial number for the American-Motors built 2.5L engine is located on a machined pad on the rear right side of the block, between cylinders number 3 and 4.

Also on the block, just above the oil filter, is the oversized/undersized component code. The codes are explained as follows:

B: cylinder bores 0.010 in. over

C: camshaft bearing bores 0.010 in. over

M: main bearing journals 0.010 in. under

P: connecting rod journals 0.010 in. under

2.8L ENGINE

See Figure 4

The serial number for the Chevrolet built 2.8L engine is located on an upward facing, machined surface on the right side of the block, just below the cylinder head and above the water pump.

4.0L ENGINE

See Figure 5

The serial number is found on a machined surface on the right side of the engine block between number 2 and 3 cylinders. For further identification, the displacement is cast into the side of the block. The letter in the code identifies the engine by displacement (cu. in.), carburetor type and compression ratio.

The undersize/oversize bearing letter codes, located on the boss directly above the oil filter, are as follows:

Letter B indicates 0.010 in. oversized cylinder bore

Letter C indicates 0.010 in. oversized camshaft block bores

Letter M indicates 0.010 in. undersized main bearings

Letter P indicates 0.010 in. undersized connecting rod bearings

5.2L & 5.9L ENGINES

The serial number is found on a machined surface on the left, front corner of the cylinder block.
