Front Axle Unit

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the wheels.
  2.  
  3. Index the driveshaft to the differential yoke for the proper alignment upon installation. Disconnect the driveshaft at the axle yoke and secure the shaft to the frame rail.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the vacuum harness from the shift motor.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the vent hose from the axle housing.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the center link at the right side of the tie rod.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the shock absorbers at the axle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering damper.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the track bar at the axle.
  16.  
  17. Loosen the stabilizer bar links at the bar and disconnect the stabilizer bar from the spring tie plates.
  18.  
  19. Loosen the bolts attaching the spring to the frame brackets.
  20.  
  21. Loosen the spring-to-shackle bolts.
  22.  
  23. Take up the weight of the axle with a floor jack.
  24.  
  25. Remove the spring U-bolts and tie plates.
  26.  
  27. Remove the front shackle bolts and remove the axle from the vehicle.
  28.  

To install:
  1. Raise the axle into position.
  2.  
  3. Install the front shackle bolts.
  4.  
  5. Install the spring U-bolts and tie plates. Torque the U-bolt nuts to 90 ft. lbs. (122 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the spring-to-shackle bolts.
  8.  
  9. Tighten the bolts attaching the spring to the frame brackets.
  10.  
  11. Connect the stabilizer bar to the spring tie plates.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the stabilizer bar links at the bar. Torque the bolts to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Connect the track bar to the axle. Torque the fasteners to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the steering damper. Torque the steering damper-to-axle fasteners to 55 ft. lbs. (75 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Connect the shock absorbers to the axle. Torque the lower shock absorber bolt to 45 ft. lbs. (61 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Connect the center link to the right side of the tie rod. Torque the center link-to-knuckle to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) and the tie rod-to-knuckle to 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Connect the vent hose at the axle housing.
  24.  
  25. Connect the vacuum harness to the shift motor.
  26.  
  27. Connect the driveshaft at the axle yoke.
  28.  
  29. Install the wheels.
  30.  
  31. Lower the vehicle.
