Bearing Replacement



Check each bearing for damage. If the bearing surface is excessively damaged, replace the cylinder head assembly or camshaft bearing cap, as necessary.

Inspection



  1. Check the camshaft journals for wear. If the journals are badly worn out, replace the camshaft.
  2.  
  3. Check the cam lobes for damage. If the lobe is damaged or excessively worn out, replace the camshaft.
  4.  
  5. Measure the cam height with a micrometer. The specifications for cam lobe height:
    1. Intake 1.3818-1.3897 in. (35.098-35.298mm).
    2.  
    3. Exhaust 1.3705-1.3783 in. (34.81-35.01mm).

  7. Check the cam surface for abnormal wear or damage, and replace if necessary.
  8.  
  9. Check each bearing for damage. If the bearing surface is excessively damaged, replace the cylinder head assembly or camshaft bearing cap, as necessary.
    NOTE
    Camshaft end play should be within specification: 0.0039-0.0059 in. (0.1-0.15mm)

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE
    Keep all valvetrain components in order for assembly.



    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Power steering pulley
     
    A/C pulley
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Tensioner pulley
     
    Timing belt
     
    Spark plug cables
     
    Cylinder head cover
     
    Camshaft sprockets
     
    Camshaft bearing caps
     
    Camshafts
     

  4.  

To install:

  1. Rotate the crankshaft to set the No. 1 at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke.
  2.  
  3. Ensure the rocker arm is correctly positioned on the lash adjuster and valve.
  4.  
  5. Install the camshaft dowel pins as shown.

  7. Install the camshafts and tighten the bearing caps in 2-3 steps as follows:
    1. Outer (front and rear) bearing caps to 14-15 ft. lbs. (19-21 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Inner (center) bearing caps to 88-106 inch lbs. (10-12 Nm).
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Install the camshaft sprockets and tighten to 58-72 ft. lbs. (79-98 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install or connect the following:

    Cylinder head cover
     
    Spark plug cables
     
    Timing belt
     
    Tensioner pulley
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    A/C pulley
     
    Power steering pulley
     
    Intake manifold
     
    Engine cover
     
    Negative battery
     

  12.  
  13. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  14.
