  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Spindle nut
     
    Lower ball joint from the knuckle
     

  4.  
  5. Press the stub shaft out of the hub, use a plaster hammer if necessary.
  6.  
  7. If removing the left side halfshaft:
    1. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the inner joint out of the transaxle.
    2.  

  8.  
  9. If removing the right side halfshaft:
    1. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the inner joint out of the center bearing bracket.
    2.  
    3. Remove the center bearing bracket mounting bolts.
    4.  
    5. Using a suitable pry bar, pry the center bearing bracket from the cylinder block.
    6.  
    7. Remove the inner shaft from the transaxle.

To install:


NOTE
Use new circlips, split pins, and self-locking nuts for assembly.

  1. Apply gear oil on the halfshaft splines and differential case contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. When installing the halfshaft, set the opening side of the circlip so it faces downward.
  4.  
  5. Install the inner joint so that the circlip is felt to seat in the retaining groove.
  6.  
  7. Install or connect the following:

    Lower ball joint. Tighten the mounting bolts to 74-88 ft. lbs. (100-120 Nm)
     
    Spindle nut and torque the nut to 148-207 ft. lbs. (200-280 Nm)
     
    Front wheel

  9. Check and/or adjust the wheel alignment.
