Wheel Bearings

Adjustment



If bearings are worn, replace with new sealed bearings.

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Release the parking brake.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear wheel
     
    Wheel speed sensor, if equipped
     
    Caliper assembly
     
    Parking brake assembly
     
    Rear axle hub mounting bolts
     
    Hub assembly
     

  6.  
  7. Using Special Tool 09455-21000, remove the tone wheel from the hub assembly.

  9. Remove the flange nut from the hub assembly.
  10.  
  11. While supporting the flange area of the bearing outer race, press out the axle hub.

  13. Using Special Tool 09544-21000, remove the bearing inner race from the axle hub.

To install:

  1. Apply a thin coat of grease to the knuckle and bearing contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Using Special Tool 09221-21000, press the bearing into the hub.
    WARNING
    Do not press against the outer race of the wheel bearing. Damage to the bearing assembly could occur.

  5. After tightening the flange nut, stake the nut to meet the concave portion of the spindle.
  6.  
  7. Using Special Tool 09221-21000, press the tone wheel onto the hub assembly.
  8.  
  9. Fix the hub assembly to the brake backing plate so the rounded area of the bearing outer race is placed facing upward.

  10.  
  11. Install the hub mounting bolts and tighten to 59-74 ft. lbs. (100-120 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Rotate the hub to seat the bearing.
  14.  
  15. Using a spring balance, measure the wheel bearing turning torque. Torque should be 9 inch lbs. (1 Nm) or less.
  16.  
  17. The remainder of the installation is the reverse of removal.
