Removal & Installation



3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Record the radio anti theft code data.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Engine cover
     
    Valve covers
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Power steering pump pulley
     
    Belt tensioner pulley
     
    Upper and lower timing belt covers
     
    No. 3 engine mount
     
    Timing belt
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor tone ring
     
    Oil filter
     
    Starter motor
     
    Lower oil pan
     
    Upper oil pan
     
    Oil pick-up tube
     
    Oil filter bracket
     
    Oil relief valve plug
     
    Oil pump

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump with a new gasket. Tighten the oil pump case bolts to 106-133 inch lbs. (12-15 Nm). Tighten the oil pump cover screws to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).

  3. Install or connect the following:

    Oil relief valve plug. Tighten the plug to 30-37 ft. lbs. (40-50 Nm)
     
    Oil filter bracket
     
    Oil pick-up tube. Tighten the bolts to 11-16 ft. lbs. (15-22 Nm)
     
    Upper oil pan
     
    Lower oil pan
     
    Starter motor
     
    Oil filter
     
    CKP sensor tone ring
     
    Crankshaft sprocket
     
    Timing belt
     
    No. 3 engine mount
     
    Upper and lower timing belt covers
     
    Belt tensioner pulley
     
    Power steering pump pulley
     
    Crankshaft pulley
     
    Idler pulley
     
    Accessory drive belts
     
    Valve covers
     
    Engine cover
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  4.  
  5. Fill the crankcase to the correct level with engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  8.  
  9. Reprogram the radio anti theft codes.
  10.  

3.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Record the radio anti theft code data.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan retaining bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan from the engine.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pump chain cover. Remove the oil pump chain sprocket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts. Remove the oil pump from the engine.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump with a new gasket. Tighten the oil pump bolts to 14.5-17.5 inch lbs. (19.6-23.5 Nm).

  3. Using a gasket scrapper, remove all old packing material from the gasket mating surfaces of the oil pan.
  4.  
  5. Before assembling the oil pan, liquid sealant TB1217H should be applied to the oil pan.
    NOTE
    After applying the sealant the part must be assembled within five minutes.

  6.  
  7. Position the oil pan to the engine block. Torque the oil pan bolts to specification using an alternating sequence pattern.
    NOTE
    After assembly wait at least thirty minutes before filling the engine with clean engine oil.

  8.  
  9. Continue the installation in the reverse order of the removal procedure.
