Removal & Installation



3.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant, so the level is below the thermostat.
  4.  
  5. Remove the water outlet fitting, then remove the thermostat.
  6.  
  7. Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces. Discard the gasket.

To install:

  1. Install the thermostat. Make sure to align the arrangement mark of thermostat housing with the jiggle valve.
  2.  
  3. Check to ensure that the flange of the thermostat is correctly seated in the socket of the thermostat housing. If the thermostat is installed in the wrong direction, the bottom of the thermostat will touch the rib inside the intake manifold, making it impossible to seat flange in position.
  4.  
  5. Position a new gasket, then install the water outlet fitting. Tighten the retainers to 12-15 ft. lbs. (17-20 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Fill the engine with coolant.
  8.  
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
  10.  
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks, then recheck the coolant level, and add coolant as necessary.
  12.  

3.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant, so the level is below the thermostat.
  4.  
  5. Remove the water inlet and thermostat.
  6.  
  7. Thoroughly clean the gasket mating surfaces. Discard the gasket, if necessary.

To install:

  1. Place the thermostat in the thermostat housing with the jiggle valve facing upward.
  2.  
  3. Install the water inlet and tighten the retainers to 12.3-14.4 ft. lbs (16.7-19.6 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Fill the engine with coolant.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks, then recheck the coolant level, and add coolant as necessary.
