Removal & Installation



3.5L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the engine cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the idler pulley.
  12.  
  13. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  14.  
  15. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
  16.  
  17. Remove the tensioner pulley.
  18.  
  19. Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers.
  20.  
  21. Remove the No. 3 engine mount.
  22.  
  23. Remove the timing belt.
  24.  
  25. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
  26.  
  27. Remove the water pump.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, while using the following torque values:

    Water pump bolts: refer to the illustration
     
    Crankshaft pulley: 130-138 ft. lbs. (180-190 Nm)

3.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Record the radio anti theft code data.
  4.  
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the accessory drive belt. Remove the water pump pulley.
  10.  
  11. Remove the water pump retaining bolts. Remove the water pump from the vehicle.
  12.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Reprogram the radio anti theft code data.
  4.  
  5. Be sure to use a new water pump gasket. Torque the retaining bolts to 16 ft. lbs.
  6.  
  7. Torque the water pump pulley bolts to 6 ft. lbs.
  8.  
  9. Be sure to refill the cooling system with the proper grade and type coolant. Start the engine and check for leaks.
