Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar)

Removal & Installation



2002-05 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the front tires.
  4.  
  5. Remove the stabilizer control link bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the control link lower control arm bolt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the exhaust pipe.
  10.  
  11. Position a suitable transaxle jack under the transaxle assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine number one and two mounting bolts from the subframe.
  14.  
  15. Remove the stabilizer mounting bolts from the subframe.
  16.  
  17. Lower the subframe enough to pull the stabilizer out from behind the subframe.
  18.  
  19. Remove the stabilizer bar from the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

2006 Models
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove the connecting bolt between the steering universal joint assembly and the pinion assembly.
  4.  
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the front tires.
  6.  
  7. Remove the stabilizer link from the strut assembly.
  8.  
  9. After removing the left and right tie rod end self locking nuts and cotter pins, remove the ball joint using a ball joint removal tool.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left and right lower arm mounting nuts and bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the engine mounting bolts. Remove the twelve bolts and nuts of the subframe, after supporting it with a jack.
  14.  
  15. After lowering the jack that is supporting the subframe, remove the stabilizer bar mounting bolts and stabilizer bar.
    NOTE
    Remove the stabilizer bar assembly through the gap between the body and rear side of the subframe. Be careful not to damage the power steering lines.

  17. Remove the brackets and bushings from the stabilizer bar, replace as required.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Torque the stabilizer bar bracket mounting bolts to 28-43 ft. lbs. (39-60 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Torque the subframe bolts with washers to 116-130 ft. lbs. (160-180 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Torque the subframe bolts without washers to 32.5-43 ft. lbs. (45-60 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Torque the engine mounting bolts to 47-62 ft. lbs. (65-85 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Torque the lower arm mounting bolts to 65-87 ft. lbs. (160-180 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Torque the front stabilizer link nuts to 72-87 ft. lbs. (160-180 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Torque the steering universal joint bolt to 9-13 ft. lbs. (13-18 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary.
