2002-05 Models

The front wheel bearings are not adjustable. Replace the wheel bearings if play exceeds 0.002 inches (0.05 mm).

2006 Models

The front wheel bearings are not adjustable. Replace the hub and bearing assembly as a complete unit.

Removal & Installation



2002-05 Models

NOTE
The front wheel bearings are serviced with the steering knuckle as an assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheel
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness
     
    Hub nut
     
    Lower ball joint
     
    Strut mounting bolts
     
    Steering knuckle

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Steering knuckle
     
    Strut mounting bolts and tighten them to 88-101 ft. lbs. (119-137 Nm).
     
    Lower ball joint. Tighten the pinch bolt to 69-85 ft. lbs. (93-115 Nm).
     
    Hub nut and tighten it to 177-199 ft. lbs. (240-270 Nm).
     
    Wheel speed sensor harness
     
    Brake caliper and rotor
     
    Front wheel
     

  2.  
  3. Check the alignment and adjust as necessary.
  4.  

2006 Models

NOTE
The front wheel bearings are serviced with the steering knuckle as an assembly.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the front tires.
  4.  
  5. Remove the wheel speed sensor and wire. Disconnect the brake hose from the strut assembly.
  6.  
  7. Unstake the driveshaft lock nut. Remove the driveshaft lock nut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the caliper mounting bolts. Secure it to the side.
  10.  
  11. Remove the split pin and castle nut from the tie rod end ball joint.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the tie rod end from the knuckle, using tool SST(09568-4A000), or equivalent.
  14.  
  15. Remove the split pin and lower arm bolt and nut. Using a plastic hammer, disconnect the driveshaft from the hub assembly.
  16.  
  17. Remove the rotor from the hub assembly.
  18.  
  19. Remove the knuckle from the strut assembly.
  20.  
  21. Separate the hub and bearing assembly from the knuckle, by loosening the bolts.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Torque the hub and bearing assembly bolts to 116-130 ft. lbs. (160-180 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Torque the knuckle to strut assembly mounting bolts to 72-87 ft. lbs. (100-120 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Torque the split pin lower arm bolt to 65-87 ft. lbs. (90-120 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Torque the split pin and castle nut to 43-58 ft. lbs. (68-80 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Torque the caliper retaining bolts to 61-72 ft. lbs. (85-100 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Torque the driveshaft lock nut to 177-199 ft. lbs. (245-275 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary.
