Parking Brake Shoes

Adjustment



Clearance Adjustment
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel and tire.
  4.  
  5. After removing the plug from the disc, rotate the toothed wheel with a screwdriver until the disc does not move, then back it up 5 notches.

Break-In Procedure



  1. While operating the parking brake pedal with 22 lbs. (100N) of pressure, drive the vehicle about 0.3 miles at a speed of 37 mph (60 kph).
  2.  
  3. Repeat the above procedure at least 2 times.
  4.  
  5. The parking brake must be held on at 30% uphill.
  6.

Removal & Installation



With Rear Disc Brakes
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the hub cap and rotor.
  6.  
  7. Remove the hub nut (A) and washer (B), then remove the rear hub (C).

  8.  
  9. Remove the shoe hold-down pin and spring (A) by pressing then rotating the spring.
  10.  
  11. Remove the adjuster assembly (B) and the lower return spring (C).

  13. Remove the strut (B) and the upper return spring (A).

  15. Remove the retaining ring (B) of the parking brake wire (A) from the back of the backing plate.

  17. Disconnect the parking brake wire from the brake shoe.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the backing plate.
  2.  
  3. Connect the parking brake wire to the brake shoe.
  4.  
  5. Install the shoe hold-down pin and spring to hold the brake shoe.
  6.  
  7. Install the adjuster assembly and the lower return spring.
  8.  
  9. Install the upper return spring and strut.
  10.  
  11. Lubricate the hub as needed, then install the rear hub.
  12.  
  13. Install the hub nut (A), then lock the nut to the spindle as shown in the accompanying illustration.

  15. Install the hub cap and the rotor.
  16.  
  17. Install the rear wheel and tire assembly.
  18.  
  19. Tighten the parking brake adjusting nut.

With Rear Drum Brakes

The rear drum brake shoes serve as the parking brakes. Refer to the procedures under Rear Drum Brakes.
