2002-05 Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Record the radio anti theft code data.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels
     
    Outer tie rod ends
     
    Power steering fluid pressure and return lines
     
    Steering intermediate shaft
     
    Steering rack brackets and fasteners
     

  8.  
  9. Remove the steering gear through the right wheel opening.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the steering gear through the right wheel opening.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Steering rack brackets and fasteners. Tighten the fasteners to 55-69 ft. lbs. (74-93 Nm).
     
    Steering intermediate shaft. Tighten the pinch bolt to 16-20 ft. lbs. (21-26 Nm).
     
    Power steering fluid pressure and return lines. Tighten the bolts to 17-26 ft. lbs. (24-35 Nm).
     
    Outer tie rod ends. Tighten the nuts to 43-58 ft. lbs. (59-78 Nm).
     
    Front wheels
     
    Negative battery cable

2006 Models



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Record the radio anti theft code data.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Drain the power steering fluid. Remove the front tires.
  6.  
  7. Remove the bolt connecting the steering column to the universal joint.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the pressure line from the power steering oil pump. Disconnect the return hose.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the split pin and the castle nut, and remove the tie rod end from the knuckle using tool SST (09568-4A000).
  12.  
  13. Remove the split pin and lower arm bolts and nut. Disconnect the stabilizer link from the strut assembly. Repeat on the other side of the vehicle.

  15. Remove the front and rear roll stopper bolts and nuts. Remove the subframe retaining bolts and nuts. Remove the rear roll stopper from the subframe.

  17. Disconnect the pressure line and the return line from the steering gear valve body housing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering gear assembly from the subframe, after removing the retaining bolts.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.  
  3. Torque the steering gear to subframe mounting bolts to 65-80 ft. lbs. (90-110 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Torque the split pin and lower arm bolt and nut to 65-87 ft. lbs. (90-110 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Fill the power steering pump with the proper grade and type fluid.
  8.  
  9. To air bleed the system, remove the fuel pump fuse, start the engine and allow it to stall.
  10.  
  11. While operating the starting motor intermittently (not more then 15 seconds at a time) turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and then all the way to the right. Repeat the procedure five or six times. Do not hold the steering wheel in the full turn position for more than ten seconds.
  12.  
  13. Check the fluid level to be sure it does not fall below the lower position on the filter.
    NOTE
    If bleeding is done at engine idle, air will be broken up and absorbed into the fluid.

  15. Check the wheel alignment.
