Location



The ECT is installed in the engine coolant passage of the cylinder head.

Operation



This component detects the temperature of the engine coolant and relays the information to the electronic control assembly. This component employs a thermistor which is sensitive to temperature changes. The electric resistance of the thermistor decreases in response to temperature rise. The ECM judges coolant temperature by the sensor output voltage and provides optimum fuel enrichment when the engine is cold.

Testing



2002-2005
  1. Remove the sensor from the engine.
  2.  
  3. With the sensing portion of the sensor immersed in hot water, check the resistance using an ohmmeter.
  4.  
  5. Specifications are as follows:

    Temperature 32°F, resistance 5.9 kohms
     
    Temperature 68°F, resistance 2.31-2.59 kohms
     
    Temperature 104°F, resistance 1.1 kohms
     
    Temperature 176°F, resistance 0.310-0.331 kohms

  7. Replace the sensor, as required.

2006
  1. Be sure the ignition switch is OFF.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  4.  
  5. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminal 1 and 3 of the connector (component side).
  6.  
  7. Specifications are as follows:

    Temperature 32°F, resistance 5.79 kohms
     
    Temperature 68°F, resistance 2.31-2.59 kohms
     
    Temperature 104°F, resistance 1.15 kohms
     
    Temperature 176°F, resistance 0.32 kohms

  9. If not within specification substitute a known good sensor and recheck for proper operation. Replace the sensor, if required.
  10.  
  11. If within specification, check the PCM as follows, ignition OFF. Connect the scan tool. Turn the ignition ON and engine OFF. Select simulation function on the scan tool. Simulate voltage at terminal 3 of the sensor harness connector.
  12.  
  13. If the signal voltage value does not change, substitute a known good PCM and repeat the test. Replace the PCM as required. If the signal voltage value does change, check connectors for looseness, poor connection, binding etc. Correct and retest.
