Inspection



3.5L Engine

Check spark plugs for the following:

  1. Broken insulator
  2.  
  3. Worn electrode
  4.  
  5. Carbon deposits
  6.  
  7. Damaged or broken gasket
  8.  
  9. Condition of the porcelain insulator at the tip of the spark plug

  11. Check the spark plug gap using a wire gap gauge, and adjust if necessary. The gap should be 0.039-0.043 in. (1.0-1.1mm)

3.8L Engine
  1. Inspect the spark plug-s electrode and ceramic insulator.

  3. If there are dark deposits:
    1. The fuel mixture may be too rich -or-
    2.  
    3. There may be low air intake
    4.  

  4.  
  5. If there are white deposits:
    1. The fuel mixture may be too lean
    2.  
    3. The ignition timing may be advanced -or-
    4.  
    5. The spark plug might not be tightening to the proper specification.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Check the electrode gap. The gap should be 0.039-0.043 in. (1.0-1.1mm).

Removal & Installation



3.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the ignition coil, as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the spark plug.
  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the spark plug and tighten to 15-22 ft. lbs. (22-30 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the ignition coil.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.  

3.5L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    WARNING
    When disconnecting the cable, only pull on the plug cable boot, never on the wire itself!

  2.  
  3. Detach the spark plug cable from the spark plug.
  4.  
  5. Use spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug(s) from the cylinder head.
    WARNING
    Do not let any dirt or debris get into the engine through the spark plugs holes while when are removed.

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the spark plug and tighten to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm). Do not over-tighten the spark plug.
  2.  
  3. Attach the spark plug wire(s) to the spark plug(s).
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6.
