Wheel Speed Sensors

Removal & Installation



Front
Rio & Optima
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    WARNING
    Be careful not the damage the connector pins when disconnecting the wheel speed sensor from the harness.

  4.  
  5. Detach the speed sensor harness connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the retaining bolt, then remove the speed sensor.

To install:

  1. Install the speed sensor and tighten the retaining bolt to 7 ft. lbs. (9.5 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Attach the speed sensor harness connector. Make sure the connector is fully seated and locked into the harness connector.
  4.  
  5. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

Sephia
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Remove the trim, then remove the wheel speed sensor and connector from the engine compartment.
  4.  

To install:

  1. Install the wheel speed sensor and connector. Tighten to 6-7 ft. lbs. (8-10 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the trim.
  4.  
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
    NOTE
    A shield wire is used to prevent interruption of the input signal from the wheel speed sensor. Return the wire to its original position after repair.

Spectra
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front wheel speed sensor mounting bolt.
  6.  
  7. Remove the mounting bolt fixed on the strut.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front wheel guard.
  10.  
  11. Detach the connector, then remove the front wheel speed sensor.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

Rear
Optima
  1. Remove the rear seat cushion.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear pillar trim assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire.
  6.  
  7. Detach the connector, then remove the wheel speed sensor.

Rio
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Loosen the rear shock absorber attaching bolt.
  4.  
  5. Remove the ABS sensor from the back plate.

  7. After removing the rear seat and rear side door trim, remove the ABS sensor and connector.

  9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Note the following tightening specifications:
    1. ABS sensor: 6-8 ft. lbs. (8-12 Nm)
    2.  
    3. Rear shock attaching bolt: 58-72 ft. lbs. (78-98 Nm).

Sephia & Spectra
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel speed sensor mounting bolt.
  6.  
  7. For Spectra, remove the rear seat side pad, then detach the rear wheel speed sensor connector and remove the sensor.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
