Testing



1.5L, 1.6L And 1.8L Engines
Resistance Check
  1. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of primary coil
  2.  
  3. Connect one lead of ohmmeter to positive (+) terminal and other lead to each negative (-) terminal. The primary resistance should be;
    1. 1.5L engine: 0.6-0.8 ohms at approx. 68°F.
    2.  
    3. 1.6L and 1.8L engines: 0.45-0.55 ohms at approx. 68°F.

  5. If not within specification, replace coil. Remember that unit has two coil assemblies, so check both of them.

  7. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of the secondary coil. The secondary resistance should be:
    1. 1.5L engine: 11-15 kilo-ohms at approx. 68°F.
    2.  
    3. 1.6L engine: 10.9-13.3 kilo-ohms at approx. 68°F.
    4.  
    5. 1.8L engine: 13-15 kilo-ohms at approx. 68°F.

  9. If not within specification, replace coil. Remember that you must check resistance of both top and bottom secondary coil. If one is out of specification, replace the whole unit.

Voltage Check
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Detach the ignition coil connector.
  4.  
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON .
  6.  
  7. For 1.5L and 1.6L engines, measure the voltage between terminal ECU and B+ at the ignition coil connector. The voltage should be about 12 volts.
  8.  
  9. For 1.8L engines, measure voltage between blue wire and green wire at ignition coil connector. Voltage should be about 12 volts.
  10.  
  11. If there is no voltage, check main fuse, ignition switch and wire harness.

2.0L Engine
Primary Coil Resistance
  1. Measure the primary coil resistance between terminals 1, 2 and 1, 3. It should be 0.58 ohms, plus or minus 10%.

Secondary Coil Resistance

WARNING
When measuring the secondary coil resistance, make sure to detach the ignition coil connector.

  1. Measure the resistance between the high-voltage terminal for the No. 1 and No. 4 cylinders, between the high-voltage terminals for the No. 2 and No. 3 cylinders. The resistance should be 8.8 kilo-ohms, plus or minus 15%.

2.4L Engine
Primary Coil Resistance
  1. Connect the negative (-) terminal of a 3V power supply to terminal 2 of the power transistor; then check whether there is continuity between terminal 3 and terminal 2 when terminal 1 and the positive (+) terminal are connected and disconnected:
    1. When they are connected, there should be continuity (about 0.78 ohms)
    2.  
    3. When they are disconnected, there should not be continuity

  3. Replace the power transistor if the readings to not agree with the specifications.
  4.  

Secondary Coil Resistance
  1. Measure the resistance between the high-voltage terminals of the ignition coil. The reading should be about 20 ohms.

2.7L Engine
Primary Coil Resistance
  1. Measure the resistance between connector terminals 4 and 3 (the coils at the No. 3 and No. 6 cylinder sides) of the ignition coil, and between terminals 4 and 1 (the coils at the No. 1 and No. 4 cylinder sides), and between terminals 4 and 2 ( the coils at the No. 2 and No. 5 cylinder sides). The resistance should be 0.74 ohm plus or minus 10%.

Secondary Coil Resistance

WARNING
When measuring the secondary coil resistance, make sure to detach the ignition coil connector.

  1. Measure the resistance between the high-voltage terminal for the No. 3 and No. 6 cylinders, between the high-voltage terminals for the No. 1 and No. 4 cylinders and between the high-voltage terminals for the No.2 and No.5 cylinders. The resistance should be 13.3 kilo-ohms, plus or minus 15%.
