Removal & Installation



1.5L, 1.6L (VIN 5) & 1.8L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine undercover, if equipped.
  6.  
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8.  
  9. Remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold and from the catalytic converter.
  10.  
  11. Remove the exhaust pipe bracket from the engine block, if necessary.
  12.  
  13. Remove the integrated stiffener from the engine block and transaxle, if equipped.
  14.  
  15. Remove the main bearing support/stiffener plate that is installed between the oil pan and engine block, if equipped.
  16.  
  17. Remove the bolts and the oil pan. It may be necessary to pry the pan away from the engine; be careful not to damage the gasket contact surfaces.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil strainer, if necessary.
  20.

  1. Clean all oil, dirt, old gasket material and sealer from the oil pan, support/stiffener plate, oil pan bolts and all gasket mating surfaces. If removed, clean the oil strainer.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with the main bearing support/stiffener plate, run a bead of silicone sealer around the perimeter of the plate, going inside the bolt holes. Install the plate and tighten the bolts.
    WARNING
    Be sure all old sealer is removed from the bolts prior to installation. Installing a bolt coated with old sealer could result in cracking of the bolt holes.

  5. Install the oil strainer using a new gasket, if removed.
  6.  
  7. If used, apply silicone sealer to new rubber end gaskets and press them into place on the engine.
  8.  
  9. Apply a bead of silicone to the perimeter of the oil pan, going around the inside of the bolt holes.
  10.  
  11. Install the pan to the engine and the oil pan bolts finger-tight.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the oil pan bolts to the specifications shown in the accompanying illustrations.
    WARNING
    Be sure all old sealer is removed from the bolts prior to installation. Installing a bolt coated with old sealer could result in cracking of the bolt holes.

  15. Install the integrated stiffener to the engine block and transaxle, if removed. Tighten the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install the transverse member, if removed. Tighten the bolts to 93 ft. lbs. (126 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the front exhaust pipe bracket, if equipped.
  20.  
  21. Install the front exhaust pipe, using new gaskets. Tighten the exhaust manifold flange nuts to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm) for 1.5L and 1.6L engines, or 34 ft. lbs. (46 Nm) for 1.8L engines.
  22.  
  23. Install the oil pan drain plug using a new gasket. Tighten the drain plug to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the engine undercover.
  26.  
  27. Fill the engine with the proper type and quantity of oil.
  28.  
  29. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Check for leaks.
  30.  

1.6L (VIN 3) & 2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the engine oil.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the rear oxygen sensor connector.
  8.  
  9. Remove the front muffler.
  10.  
  11. Remove the exhaust manifold.
  12.  
  13. Remove the front muffler bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pan.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Install the oil pan.
  2.  
  3. Using a razor blade and gasket scraper, remove all the old packing material from the gasket surfaces.
  4.  
  5. Apply liquid gasket as an even bead, centered between the edges of the mating surface.
  6.  
  7. Install the oil pan with the bolts. Uniformly tighten the bolts in several passes to 7-8.5 ft. lbs. (10-12 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the front muffler bracket.
  10.  
  11. Install the exhaust manifold.
  12.  
  13. Install the front muffler.
  14.  
  15. Connect the rear oxygen sensor connector.
  16.  
  17. Fill with engine oil
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Check for leaks.
  20.  

2.4L & 2.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the timing belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pan.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan screen and gasket, if necessary.

To install:

  1. Install the oil pump screen. Torque the bolts to 11-16 ft. lbs. (15-22 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install a 0.16 in. (44mm) bead of sealant into the groove of the oil pan flange. Install the oil pan within 15 minutes of applying the sealant.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pan and tighten the bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs. (10-12 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the timing belt.
  8.  
  9. Fill the engine with the proper type and quantity of oil.
  10.  
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Check for leaks.
  12.
