Removal & Installation



1.5L & 1.6L (VIN 5) Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the drive belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the alternator.
  12.  
  13. Remove the A/C compressor and bracket and position aside. Do not disconnect the refrigerant lines.
  14.  
  15. Remove the timing belt pulley lockbolt.
  16.  
  17. Remove the timing belt pulley.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil strainer.
  20.  
  21. Remove the oil pump.
  22.  
  23. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the retainers to the specifications shown in the illustration.

1.6L (VIN 3) & 2.0L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Remove the drive belts.
  6.  
  7. Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing mark "T" of the timing belt cover.
  8.  
  9. Remove the timing belt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the bolt and timing belt idler.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pan and oil screen.
  14.  
  15. Remove the alternator.
  16.  
  17. Remove the air conditioner compressor tensioner bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the bolts and front case.
    NOTE
    Keep the bolts in order when removing. Each bolt is a different length.

  20.  
  21. Remove the screw from the pump housing, then separate the housing and cover.
  22.  
  23. Remove the inner rotor and outer rotor.
  24.

  1. Install the oil pump.
  2.  
  3. Place the inner and outer rotors into front case with the marks facing the oil pump cover side.
  4.  
  5. Install the oil pump cover to front case with the 7 screws. Tighten the screws to 4-6.5 ft. lbs. (6-9 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Check that the oil pump turns freely.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pump on the cylinder block.
  10.  
  11. Place a new front case gasket on the cylinder block.
  12.  
  13. Apply engine oil to the lip of the oil pump seal. Then, install the oil pump onto the crankshaft.
  14.  
  15. When the pump is in place, clean any excess grease off the crankshaft and check that the oil seal lip is not distorted. Tighten the mounting bolts as follows:
    1. 1.6L (VIN 3) engine: 14-17 ft. lbs. (19-24 Nm).
    2.  
    3. 2.0L engine: 14.5-19.5 ft. lbs. (19.5-26.5 Nm).

  17. Apply a light coat of oil to the front case oil seal lip.
  18.  
  19. Using Special Tool 09214-32000, install the front case oil seal.
  20.  
  21. Install or connect the following:

    Air conditioner compressor tensioner bracket
     
    Alternator
     
    Oil screen
     
    Oil pan
     
    Timing belt tensioner
     
    Timing belt
     
    Drive belts

  23. Fill with engine oil to the connect level.
  24.  
  25. Start the engine and check for leaks.
  26.  

1.8L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the crankshaft pulley, timing belt cover, belt and the crankshaft sprocket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the oil pan.
  10.  
  11. Remove the oil pick-up tube and discard the gasket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pump attaching bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil pump.
  16.  
  17. Remove the front crankshaft seal from the oil pump if the pump is being replaced.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Clean the oil, dirt and old sealant from all contact surfaces.
  2.  
  3. Install new O-rings on the oil pump.
  4.  
  5. If the oil seal was removed from the oil pump, apply clean engine oil to the lip of the seal. Push the seal in lightly by hand. Press the seal, with a protrusion of 0.02-0.04 in. (0.5-1.0mm), into the oil pump with a suitable tool (49 B014 401).
  6.  
  7. Apply a bead of silicone to the oil pump at the cylinder block contact surface, going inside the bolt holes.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil pump and tighten the bolts to 14-18 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the new gasket and the oil pump pick-up tube. Tighten the mounting bolts to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-11 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the oil pan.
  14.  
  15. Install the crankshaft sprocket, timing belt and cover.
  16.  
  17. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20.  
  21. Fill the engine with the proper type and quantity of oil. Run the engine and check for leaks.
  22.  

2.4L & 2.7L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine oil.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6.  
  7. Remove the oil pan, screen and gasket.
  8.  
  9. Remove the relief plunger and gasket.
  10.  
  11. Remove the relief spring and relief valve from the oil filter bracket.
  12.  
  13. Remove the oil pressure switch.
  14.  
  15. Remove the oil filter bracket and gasket.
  16.  
  17. Plug the cap from the oil pump portion of the front case.
  18.  
  19. Remove the left side of the cylinder block plug and insert a screwdriver with a 0.32 in. (8mm) diameter shaft in to the plug hole. The screwdriver must be inserted more than 2.4 in. (60mm).
  20.  
  21. Remove the oil pump driven gear and left counter balance shaft retaining bolt.
  22.  
  23. Remove the front case and gasket.
  24.  
  25. Remove the 2 counter balance shafts from the cylinder block.
  26.  
  27. Remove the oil pump cover and gears from the front case.
  28.  

To install:

  1. Apply engine oil to the oil pump gears.
  2.  
  3. Install the oil pump gears, aligning the 2 timing marks.
  4.  
  5. Install the crankshaft front oil seal, using a proper tool.
  6.  
  7. Install the special tool 09214-32100 on the front end of the crankshaft and apply a thin coat of oil to the outer circumference of the special tool to install the front case.
  8.  
  9. Install the front case with a new gasket and temporarily tighten the flange bolts, except the bolts for the filter bracket. Torque the front case bolts to 14-20 ft. lbs. (20-27 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Insert a screwdriver through the plug hole in the left side of the cylinder block. After checking that the shaft is in position, tighten.
  12.  
  13. Install the remaining components in the reverse of the removal procedure.
  14.  
  15. Fill the engine with the proper type and quantity of oil. Run the engine and check for leaks.
