1.5L And 1.6L (VIN 5) Engines



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the power steering fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Wheel
     
    Tie rod from the wheel knuckle
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Power steering gear hoses
     
    Steering intermediate shaft
     
    Steering gear mounting bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Slide the steering gear to the left and pull the right tie rod through the fender opening.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering gear by sliding it to the right.

To install:

  1. Position the steering gear into its mounting location.
  2.  
  3. Attach the steering intermediate shaft to the pinion and tighten the mounting bolt to 13-20 ft. lbs. (18-26 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the power steering gear hoses. Tighten the bolts to 29-43 ft. lbs. (39-59 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the steering gear mounting bolts to 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Catalytic converter
     
    Tie rod end to the wheel knuckle
     
    Wheel
     
    Negative battery cable
     

  10.  
  11. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir to the correct level.
  12.  

1.6L (VIN 3) Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the power steering reservoir by disconnecting the return hose.
  6.  
  7. Remove the pressure hose from the power steering pump.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the steering shaft by removing the universal joint mounting bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front wheels
     
    Lower arm mounting bolts from the wheel knuckle assembly
     
    Tie rod end from the knuckle
     
    Intermediate shaft universal joint from the steering gear pinion shaft
     
    Stabilizer link from the strut assembly
     
    Engine mounting bolts from the sub-frame.
     
    Front sub-frame
     
    Steering gear heat cover
     
    Engine mounting bracket bolts
     
    Power steering lines from the steering gear
     
    Steering gear mounting bolts

  13. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Note the following torques:
    1. Steering gear mounting bolts: 65-79 ft. lbs. (90-110 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Heat cover: 6-9 ft. lbs. (8-12 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Power steering pressure hose to power steering pump: 40-47 ft. lbs. (55-65 Nm)
    6.

  15. Fill the power steering reservoir to the correct level.
  16.  

1.8L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the power steering fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Front wheels
     
    Tie rod from the wheel knuckle
     
    Power steering line brackets
     
    Power steering lines from steering gear
     
    Intermediate shaft from the steering gear
     
    Steering rack mounting nuts
     
    Change control rod and extension bar from transaxle
     
    Catalytic converter
     
    Cross-member
     
    No. 1 engine mounting bolts
     

  6.  
  7. Support the sub-frame with a suitable jack.
  8.  
  9. Remove the sub-frame mounting bolts.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering gear and rack assembly from the right side of the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Installation is the reverse order of removal. Note the following torques:
    1. Steering rack mounting nuts: 27-38 ft. lbs. (37-52 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Sub-frame mounting bolts: 69-86 ft. lbs. (93-117 Nm).
    4.  
    5. No. 1 engine mounting bolts: 49-69 ft. lbs. (67-93 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Cross-member mounting bolts: 48-65 ft. lbs. (64-89 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Transaxle extension bar: 28-38 ft. lbs. (38-51 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Transaxle change control rod: 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm).

  15. Fill the power steering reservoir to the correct level.

2.0L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the power steering fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Air intake assembly
     
    Power steering lines from the gear box
     
    Universal joint assembly from the gear box
     
    Front tires
     
    Tie rod from the wheel knuckle
     
    Stabilizer bar dust cover
     
    Power steering line clamps
     
    Steering gear mounting bolts.
     

  6.  
  7. Remove the steering through the left side of the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
  10.  
  11. Refill the power steering reservoir to the correct level.

2.4L & 2.7L Engine



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the power steering fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Intermediate shaft universal joint from the steering gear pinion
     
    Front wheels
     
    Tie rod from the wheel knuckle
     
    Front muffler
     
    Front and rear roll stopper bolts
     
    Front sub-frame
     
    Power steering lines from steering gear
     
    Steering gear mounting brackets
     

  6.  
  7. Move the rack completely to the right and then remove the gear box to the left from the sub-frame.
  8.  
  9. Installation is the reverse order of removal.
