Wheel Bearings

Adjustment

Except Rio

The wheel bearings on these vehicles are not adjustable. To check if the bearing requires service, remove the wheel and tire assembly, brake caliper and disc brake rotor. Install a dial indicator with the indicator foot resting on the wheel hub. Try to move the hub in and out. If there is more than 0.002 in. (0.05mm) bearing play, check the wheel hub nut torque or replace the hub and bearing assembly.

Rio
Bearing Preload
  1. Make sure the parking brake is fully released.
  2.
  3. Remove the wheel and hub (grease) cap.
  4.
  5. Rotate the brake drum to be sure there is no drag.
  6.
  7. Seat the bearings by tightening the nut after raising the nut tap. Tighten to 18-22 ft. lbs. (25-29 Nm).
  8.
  9. Loosen the nut slightly until it can be turned by hand.
    NOTE
Before the bearing preload can be set, the amount of seal drag must be measured and added to the required preload. Use a pull scale to measure the oil seal drag.

  10.
  11. Pull the scale squarely. Take the oil seal drag value when the wheel hub starters to turn and record it.
  12.
  13. Add the oil seal drag value in the last step to the specified value to 0.6-1.9 lbs. (2.6-8.5 N). This is the standard bearing preload.
  14.
  15. Turn the nut slowly to adjust the standard bearing preload while checking with the pull scale.
  16.
  17. Firmly fix the lock nut into the groove.
  18.
  19. Install the hub cap and wheel.
  20.
