Check spark plugs for the following:
- Broken insulator
- Worn electrode
- Carbon deposits
- Damaged or broken gasket
Condition of the porcelain insulator at the tip of the spark plug
Check the spark plug gap using a wire gap gauge, and adjust if necessary. The gap should be 0.039-0.043 in. (1.0-1.1mm)
Removal & Installation
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
WARNINGWhen disconnecting the cable, only pull on the plug cable boot, never on the wire itself!
- Detach the spark plug cable from the spark plug or remove the ignition coil, as applicable.
Use spark plug wrench to remove the spark plug(s) from the cylinder head.
WARNINGDo not let any dirt or debris get into the engine through the spark plugs holes while when are removed.
Install the spark plug and tighten, as follows:
- 1.5L, 1.6L, 1.8L and 2.0L engines: 18-22 ft. lbs. (25-30 Nm)
- Attach the spark plug wire(s) to the spark plug(s) or install the ignition coil, as applicable.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
