Transmission Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the automatic transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove the control cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the under cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front propeller shaft (4WD).
  12.  
  13. Remove the front muffler and the heater protector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the transfer case connector (4WD).
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear propeller shaft.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil cooler pipe.
  20.  
  21. Remove the speed sensor connector.
  22.  
  23. Remove the back-up lamp switch connector.
  24.  
  25. Remove the starter motor.
  26.  
  27. Remove the transmission mounting bolt.
  28.  
  29. Support the transmission on the jack.
  30.  
  31. Remove the transmission with transfer case (4WD vehicle).
  32.  

To install:

  1. Install the transmission and transfer case (if equipped). Tighten the flange bolts to 29-38 ft. lbs. (42-54 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the starter motor.
  4.  
  5. Connect the back-up lamp switch connector.
  6.  
  7. Connect the speed sensor connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil cooler pipe.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear propeller shaft.
  12.  
  13. Connect the transfer case connector. (4WD)
  14.  
  15. Install the front muffler and the heater protector.
  16.  
  17. Install the front propeller shaft (4WD).
  18.  
  19. Install the under cover.
  20.  
  21. Install the control cable.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  
  25. Fill the transaxle to the correct level with the proper transmission fluid.
  26.  
  27. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Drain the automatic transmission fluid.
  6.  
  7. Remove the control cable.
  8.  
  9. Remove the under cover.
  10.  
  11. Remove the front driveshaft (4WD).
  12.  
  13. Remove the front muffler and the heater protector.
  14.  
  15. Remove the transfer case connector (4WD).
  16.  
  17. Remove the rear driveshaft.
  18.  
  19. Remove the oil cooler pipe.
  20.  
  21. Remove the speed sensor connector.
  22.  
  23. Remove the back-up lamp switch connector.
  24.  
  25. Remove the starter motor.
  26.  
  27. Remove the transmission mounting bolt.
  28.  
  29. Support the transmission on the jack.
  30.  
  31. Remove the transmission with transfer case (4WD vehicle).
  32.  

To install:

  1. Install the transmission and transfer case (if equipped). Tighten the flange bolts to 29-38 ft. lbs. (42-54 Nm).

  3. Install the starter motor.
  4.  
  5. Connect the back-up lamp switch connector.
  6.  
  7. Connect the speed sensor connector.
  8.  
  9. Install the oil cooler pipe.
  10.  
  11. Install the rear driveshaft.
  12.  
  13. Connect the transfer case connector. (4WD)
  14.  
  15. Install the front muffler and the heater protector.
  16.  
  17. Install the front driveshaft (4WD).
  18.  
  19. Install the under cover.
  20.  
  21. Install the control cable.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  
  25. Fill the transaxle to the correct level with the proper transmission fluid.
  26.  
  27. Start the engine and check for leaks.
