Inspection

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2.
  3. Check the camshaft journals for wear. If the journals are badly worn out, replace the camshaft.
  4.
  5. Check the cam lobes for damage. If the lobes are damaged or worn, replace the camshaft.
  6.
  7. Measure the camshaft lobes.

Standard intake lobe height: 1.3818-1.3897 inches (35.098-35.298 mm)

Standard exhaust lobe height: 1.3705-1.3783 inches (34.81-35.01 mm)

  8.
  9. Check each bearing for damage. Replace the cylinder head or camshaft bearing cap as necessary.

  1. Set the No. 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center of the compression stroke.
  2.
  3. Install the lifters and rocker arms in their original positions.
  4.
  5. Install the camshafts aligned according to the illustration.
  6.
  7. The left and right banks of the camshafts are different and you should be careful not to confuse them. Identification signals are as follows:

Left bank - Intake (IN): I; Exhaust (Ex): E

Right bank - Intake (IN): J; Exhaust (Ex): H

  8.
  9. Confirm the identification mark and the number. Bearing caps of No.3, No.4, and No.5 have the front mark and arrange the front mark upon the cylinder head while installing the bearing caps. Identification marks are as follows:

    Intake: I

    Exhaust: E

  10.
  11. Install the bearing caps. Tighten the bolts evenly in 2 or 3 steps to the following torque specifications:

Front and rear bearing caps: 14-15 ft. lbs. (19-21 Nm)

Center bearing caps: 7-9 ft. lbs. (10-12 Nm)

  12.
  13. Install the gasket to the cylinder head cover correctly.
  14.
  15. Clean sealing surface on camshaft cap.
  16.
  17. Apply sealant to the sealing surface on cylinder head cover and camshaft cap.
  18.
  19. Install the cylinder head cover to the cylinder head.
  20.
  21. Install the camshaft sprockets. Tighten the bolts to 58-72 ft. lbs. (79-98 Nm).
  22.
  23. Install the timing belt.
  24.
  25. Install the upper and lower timing belt covers.
  26.
