Adjustment



The rear bearings are not adjustable. Replace the rear bearings if play exceeds 0.002 inches (0.05 mm).

Removal & Installation



Refer to Axle Shaft, Bearing and Seal in the DRIVE TRAIN Section of this chapter.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheels.
  6.  
  7. Remove the disc brake and parking brake assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the parking brake cable and wheel speed sensor cable.
  10.  
  11. Remove the rear axle shaft mounting bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear axle shaft.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bearing collar and bearing from the axle.
  16.  
  17. Using a slide hammer, remove the oil seal.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Apply grease to the oil seal lip and using the appropriate seal driver, install the new axle seal into the differential.
  2.  
  3. Install the new wheel bearing and retainer collar to the rear axle shaft.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear axle shaft. Torque the axle shaft mounting bolts to 32-44 ft. lbs. (43-60 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the wheel speed sensor and parking brake cables.
  8.  
  9. Install the disc brake and parking brake assembly and the rear wheels.
  10.  
  11. Adjust the parking brake lever.
  12.  
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14.
