Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Remove the starter heat shield.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter motor.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the starter motor. Tighten the bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs. (10-12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the starter heat shield.
  4.  
  5. Connect the starter motor electrical connectors. Tighten the battery terminal nut to 3-4 ft. lbs. (4-6 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
  6.  
  7. Remove the starter heat shield.
  8.  
  9. Remove the starter motor.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the starter motor. Tighten the bolts to 7-9 ft. lbs. (10-12 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the starter heat shield.
  4.  
  5. Connect the starter motor electrical connectors. Tighten the battery terminal nut to 3-4 ft. lbs. (4-6 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8.  

Testing & Troubleshooting



The starter should crank the engine smoothly and steadily. If the starter engages, but cranks the engine erratically, remove it, and inspect the starter drive gear and torque converter ring gear for damage. Check the drive gear overrunning clutch for binding or slipping when the armature is rotated with the drive gear held. If damaged, replace the gears.
