Operation

The CKP is used to inform the ECM when the No.1 piston is at top dead center. This information is used for controlling and adjusting ignition and fuel injector timing.

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  6.
  7. Remove the bolt that retains the sensor in place.
  8.
  9. Remove the sensor from the transmission cover
  10.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.

Testing

  1. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  2.
  3. Measure the distance from the housing to teeth on the flywheel/torque converter (measurement -A-) and from the mounting surface on the sensor to the sensor tip (measurement -B-). Subtract -B- from -A-, specification should be 0.037-0.067 inch.
  4.
  5. If not within specification, replace the sensor.
  6.

  1. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between BOP pin 16 and BOB pin 43.
  2.
  3. Specification should be 800-900 ohms at 68 degrees F.
  4.
  5. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  6.
  7. Measure the distance from the housing to teeth on the flywheel/torque converter (measurement -A-) and from the mounting surface on the sensor to the sensor tip (measurement -B-). Subtract -B- from -A-, specification should be 0.037-0.067 inch.
  8.
  9. If not within specification, replace the sensor.
