Operation

The knock sensor is used to detect engine vibrations caused by preignition or detonation and provides information to the ECM, which then retards the timing to eliminate detonation.

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Remove the intake manifold support bracket.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  8.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.

Testing

  1. With the sensor still connected, install a voltmeter between terminal 3 (yel/grn) and ground.
  2.
  3. Turn the ignition switch ON.
  4.
  5. Tap the engine crossmember bracket, using a wrench.
  6.
  7. Verify that a voltage spike (less than 1 volt) is output from the sensor.
  8.
  9. If no voltage spike is observed, replace the sensor.
  10.
