Throttle Position Sensor

Print

Operation

On 1998-2002 vehicles, the throttle position sensor provides a signal to the ECM that is related to the relative throttle plate position. As the throttle plate moves in relation to driving conditions, a signal is sent to the control unit which adjusts the injector pulse width and air/fuel ratio. As the throttle plate is opened further, more air is taken into the combustion chambers, and as a result the relative fuel demand of the engine changes. The throttle position sensor relays this information to the ECM which in alters the fuel amount.

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Be sure that the ignition switch is in the OFF position.
  4.
  5. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the sensor retaining screws. Remove the sensor from its mounting.
  8.

To install:

  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
  2.

Testing

  1. Disconnect the connector from the sensor.
  2.
  3. Connect an ohmmeter between sensor terminals 2 and 3.
  4.
  5. Verify that the resistance increases according to throttle angle.
  6.
  7. Specifications are as follows:

On 1998-2002 vehicles, measuring condition: fully closed resistance approximately 2.4 kohm

On 1998-2002 vehicles, measuring condition: fully open resistance approximately 1 kohm

  8.
  9. If not within specification, replace the sensor.
  10.
  11. Verify that the throttle is at the closed throttle position.
  12.
  13. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  14.
  15. Connect a voltmeter between terminal 3 (yel/blk) and terminal 2 (grn/yel) on the TPS connector.
  16.
  17. Once again, verify that the throttle is at the closed throttle position.
  18.
  19. Fully open the throttle valve and verify that the voltage at terminal 3 is within specification.
  20.
  21. Specifications are as follows:

Measuring condition: fully closed, 0.5 volt

Measuring condition: fully open, 4.1 volts

  22.
  23. If not within specification, replace the sensor.
  24.
