Testing

Primary Resistance Check
  1. Using an ohmmeter, check primary coil resistance as follows:
    1. Connect one lead of the ohmmeter to the to the positive (+) terminal and the other lead to each negative (-) terminal.
    2.
    3. Primary coil resistance should be between 0.45-0.55 ohms at 68°F (20°C)
    4.
    5. If not within specification, replace coil.
      NOTE
Remember that the unit has two coil assemblies. Make certain to test the primary circuits on both coils and replace the assembly if either coil is not within specifications.

Secondary Resistance Check
  1. Using an ohmmeter, check coil secondary resistance as follows:
    1. Connect one lead of the ohmmeter to negative (-) terminal and the other to the center terminal.
    2.
    3. Secondary coil resistance should be between 13-15k ohms at 68°F (20°C)
    4.
    5. If not within specification, replace coil.
      NOTE
Remember that the unit has two coil assemblies. Make certain to test the secondary circuits on both coils and replace the assembly if either coil is not within specifications.

Voltage Check
  1. Make sure the ignition switch is in the OFF position.
  2.
  3. Disconnect the ignition coil connector.
  4.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
  6.
  7. At the coil connector, measure voltage between both white and red wires and ground.
  8.
  9. If voltage is not approximately 12 volts, check the main fuse, ignition switch and wiring harness for problems and repair as necessary.
