Rear Main Seal

Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Drain the transmission fluid.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission
     
    Clutch cover and disc, if equipped
     
    Flywheel, if equipped
     
    Rear cover
     
    Rear main oil seal

To install:

  1. Coat the new seal with clean oil and press the seal into the cover.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Rear cover
     
    Flywheel onto the crankshaft. While holding the flywheel torque the bolts in sequence:
     
    Step 1: 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
     
    Step 2: 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
     
    Step 3: 73 ft. lbs. (99 Nm).
     

    1. Clutch disc and cover. Torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Transmission
    4.  
    5. Negative battery cable
    6.  

  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission to the proper level.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  8.  

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section .

  3. Drain the transmission fluid.

  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
     
    Transmission
     
    Clutch cover and disc, if equipped
     
    Flywheel, if equipped
     
    Rear cover
     
    Rear main oil seal

To install:

  1. Coat the new seal with clean oil and press the seal into the cover.
  2.  
  3. Install or connect the following:

    Rear cover
     
    Flywheel onto the crankshaft. While holding the flywheel torque the bolts in sequence:
     

    1. Step 1: 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Step 2: 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Step 3: 73 ft. lbs. (99 Nm).

      Clutch disc and cover. Torque the bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).
       
      Transmission
       
      Negative battery cable
       

    6.  

  4.  
  5. Fill the transmission to the proper level.
  6.  
  7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
  8.

  1. Coat the new seal with clean oil and press the seal into the cover.

  5. Fill the transmission to the proper level.

  7. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
