    Removal & Installation

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2.  


    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait for at least 10 minutes for the air bag module to deplete its stored energy.

    1. Remove the driver-s side air bag and steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Position the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
      2.  
      3. Remove the 4 steering wheel-to-air bag module bolts.
      4.  
      5. Carefully, lift the air bag module and disconnect the electrical connector.
      6.  

    2.  


    CAUTION
    Place the air bag module in a safe location with the front facing upward.

    1. Remove the steering wheel-to-steering column nut.
    2.  


    NOTE
    If may be necessary to mark the steering wheel to steering column alignment.

    1. Using a steering wheel puller, press the steering wheel from the steering column.
    2.  

    1. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
    2.  
    3. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
    4.  
    5. Remove the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Remove both the rear and front consoles.
      2.  
      3. Remove the knee bolster assembly.
      4.  
      5. Remove the -T- bar section.
      6.  
      7. Remove the relay bracket.
      8.  
      9. Remove the turn signal assembly and the upper/lower steering column covers.
      10.  
      11. Remove the hood release handle lockscrew, the hood release handle and the cable assembly nut.
      12.  
      13. Remove the left side front pillar trim and the lower left side cover.
      14.  
      15. Remove the 2 left side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      16.  
      17. At the left side of the instrument panel, remove the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      18.  
      19. Remove the ashtray.
      20.  
      21. Remove the center panel trim.
      22.  
      23. Remove the ventilation control panel.
      24.  
      25. At the center of the windshield next to the windshield, remove the cap and the mounting bolt. Remove the right side front pillar trim and the lower right side cover.
      26.  
      27. Remove the 2 right side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      28.  
      29. At the right side of the instrument panel, remove the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      30.  
      31. Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts and lower the steering column.
      32.  
      33. Disconnect the instrument panel electrical connectors.
      34.  
      35. Remove the instrument panel.
      36.  

    6.  
    7. Remove the blower/evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Disconnect the air conditioning refrigerant lines from the evaporator core and discard the gaskets. Plug the openings to prevent contamination.
      2.  
      3. Disconnect the fresh air control cable from the blower/evaporator housing inlet duct.
      4.  
      5. Disconnect the 5 connectors from the bottom of the blower/evaporator housing.
      6.  
      7. Move the carpeting from the bulkhead to gain access to the hole cover plate.
      8.  
      9. Remove the 4 hole cover plate nuts and the plate.
      10.  
      11. Remove the 2 upper blower/evaporator housing bolts.
      12.  
      13. Remove the 2 lower blower/evaporator housing-to-bulkhead nuts.
      14.  
      15. Remove the blower/evaporator housing.
      16.  

    8.  
    9. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
    10.  
    11. Remove the temperature control cable from the heater housing.
    12.  
    13. Remove the 2 lower heater housing nuts and the upper heater housing-to-bulkhead nut.
    14.  
    15. Remove the heater housing.
    16.  
    17. Disassemble the heater housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Remove the seal from the heater core tube connections.
      2.  
      3. Remove the vent seal.
      4.  
      5. Remove the 2 wiring harness-to-heater servo screws.
      6.  
      7. Remove the 8 heater housing clips located on the servo side (left side).
      8.  
      9. Remove the left side of the heater housing.
      10.  
      11. Remove the 6 heater housing assembly clips.
      12.  
      13. Remove the 4 heater core tube mounting bracket screws and the bracket.
      14.  
      15. Remove the 8 remaining heater housing clips and disassemble the housings.
      16.  
      17. Remove the heater core from the housing.
      18.

    To install:

    1. Assemble the heater housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the heater core to the housing.
      2.  
      3. Assemble the housings and install the 8 remaining heater housing clips.
      4.  
      5. Install the heater core tube mounting bracket and the 4 bracket screws.
      6.  
      7. Install the 6 heater housing assembly clips.
      8.  
      9. Install the left side of the heater housing.
      10.  
      11. Install the 8 heater housing clips located on the servo side (left side).
      12.  
      13. Install the 2 wiring harness-to-heater servo screws.
      14.  
      15. Install the vent seal.
      16.  
      17. Install the seal to the heater core tube connections.
      18.  

    2.  
    3. Install the heater housing.
    4.  
    5. Install the 2 lower heater housing nuts and the upper heater housing-to-bulkhead nut.
    6.  
    7. Install the temperature control cable to the heater housing.
    8.  
    9. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
    10.  
    11. Install the blower/evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the blower/evaporator housing.
      2.  
      3. Install the 2 lower blower/evaporator housing-to-bulkhead nuts.
      4.  
      5. Install the 2 upper blower/evaporator housing bolts.
      6.  
      7. Install the hole cover plate and the 4 plate nuts.
      8.  
      9. Move the carpeting over the bulkhead.
      10.  
      11. Connect the 5 connectors to the bottom of the blower/evaporator housing.
      12.  
      13. Connect the fresh air control cable to the blower/evaporator housing inlet duct.
      14.  
      15. Using new gaskets, connect the air conditioning refrigerant lines to the evaporator core.
      16.  

    12.  
    13. Install the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the instrument panel.
      2.  
      3. Connect the instrument panel electrical connectors.
      4.  
      5. Install the steering column and lower the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
      6.  
      7. At the right side of the instrument panel, install the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      8.  
      9. Install the 2 right side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      10.  
      11. Install the right side front pillar trim and the lower right side cover.
      12.  
      13. At the center of the windshield next to the windshield, install the cap and the mounting bolt.
      14.  
      15. Install the ventilation control panel.
      16.  
      17. Install the center panel trim.
      18.  
      19. Install the ashtray.
      20.  
      21. At the left side of the instrument panel, install the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      22.  
      23. Install the 2 left side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      24.  
      25. Install the lower left side cover and the left side front pillar trim.
      26.  
      27. Install the cable assembly nut, the hood release handle and the hood release handle lockscrew.
      28.  
      29. Install the turn signal assembly and the upper/lower steering column covers.
      30.  
      31. Install the relay bracket.
      32.  
      33. Install the -T- bar section.
      34.  
      35. Install the knee bolster assembly.
      36.  
      37. Install both the rear and front consoles.
      38.  

    14.  
    15. Evacuate and charge the air conditioning system refrigerant.
    16.  
    17. Refill the cooling system.
    18.  
    19. Install the driver-s side air bag and steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the steering wheel to the steering column.
      2.  
      3. Install the steering wheel-to-steering column nut and torque the nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
      4.  
      5. Carefully, install the air bag module and connect the electrical connector.
      6.  
      7. Install the 4 steering wheel-to-air bag module bolts and torque to 72-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
      8.  

    20.  
    21. Connect the negative battery cable.
    22.  
    23. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
    24.  

    1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
      CAUTION

      15. Remove the 2 left side -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      16.  
      17. At the left side of the instrument panel, remove the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      18.  
      19. Remove the ashtray.
      20.  
      21. Remove the center panel trim.
      22.  
      23. Remove the ventilation control panel.
      24.  
      25. At the center of the windshield next to the windshield, remove the cap and the mounting bolt.
      26.  
      27. " Remove the right side front pillar trim and the lower right side cover.
      28.  
      29. Remove the 2 right side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      30.  
      31. At the right side of the instrument panel, remove the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      32.  
      33. Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts and lower the steering column.
      34.  
      35. Disconnect the instrument panel electrical connectors.
      36.  
      37. Remove the instrument panel.
      38.  

    12.  
    13. Remove the blower/evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Disconnect the air conditioning refrigerant lines from the evaporator core and discard the gaskets. Plug the openings to prevent contamination.
      2.  
      3. Disconnect the fresh air control cable from the blower/evaporator housing inlet duct.
      4.  
      5. Disconnect the 5 connectors from the bottom of the blower/evaporator housing.
      6.  
      7. Move the carpeting from the bulkhead to gain access to the cover plate.
      8.  
      9. Remove the 4 hole cover plate nuts and the plate.
      10.  
      11. Remove the 2 upper blower/evaporator housing bolts.
      12.  
      13. Remove the 2 lower blower/evaporator housing-to-bulkhead nuts.
      14.  
      15. Remove the blower/evaporator housing.
      16.

    15. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
    16.  
    17. Remove the temperature control cable from the heater housing.
    18.  
    19. Remove the 2 lower heater housing nuts and the upper heater housing-to-bulkhead nut.

    21. Remove the heater housing.

    23. Disassemble the heater housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Remove the seal from the heater core tube connections.
      2.  
      3. Remove the vent seal.
      4.  
      5. Remove the 2 wiring harness-to-heater servo screws.
      6.  
      7. Remove the 8 heater housing clips located on the servo side (left side).
      8.  
      9. Remove the left side of the heater housing.
      10.  
      11. Remove the 6 heater housing assembly clips.
      12.  
      13. Remove the 4 heater core tube mounting bracket screws and the bracket.
      14.  
      15. Remove the 8 remaining heater housing clips and disassemble the housings.
      16.  
      17. Remove the heater core from the housing.

    To install:

      1. Install the heater core to the housing.

      7. Install the hole cover plate and the 4 plate nuts.
      8.  
      9. Move the carpeting over the bulkhead.
      10.  
      11. Connect the 5 connectors to the bottom of the blower/evaporator housing.

      13. Connect the fresh air control cable to the blower/evaporator housing inlet duct.

      7. At the right side of the instrument panel, install the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      8.  
      9. Install the 2 right side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      10.  
      11. Install the right side front pillar trim and the lower right side cover.
      12.  
      13. At the center of the windshield next to the windshield, install the cap and the mounting bolt.
      14.  
      15. Install the ventilation control panel.
      16.  
      17. Install the center panel trim.
      18.  
      19. Install the ashtray.
      20.  
      21. At the left side of the instrument panel, install the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      22.  
      23. Install the 2 left side -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      24.  
      25. Install the lower left side cover and the left side front pillar trim.
      26.  
      27. Install the cable assembly nut, the hood release handle and the hood release handle lockscrew.
      28.  
      29. Install the turn signal assembly and the upper/lower steering column covers.

      25. At the center of the windshield next to the windshield, remove the cap and the mounting bolt.

      27. " Remove the right side front pillar trim and the lower right side cover.
      28.  
      29. Remove the 2 right side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.

      31. At the right side of the instrument panel, remove the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.

      33. Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts and lower the steering column.
      34.  
      35. Disconnect the instrument panel electrical connectors.
      36.  
      37. Remove the instrument panel.
      38.  

    10.  
    11. Remove the blower/evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Disconnect the air conditioning refrigerant lines from the evaporator core and discard the gaskets. Plug the openings to prevent contamination.
      2.  
      3. Disconnect the fresh air control cable from the blower/evaporator housing inlet duct.
      4.  
      5. Disconnect the 5 connectors from the bottom of the blower/evaporator housing.
      6.  
      7. Move the carpeting from the bulkhead to gain access to the hole cover plate.
      8.  
      9. Remove the 4 hole cover plate nuts and the plate.
      10.  
      11. Remove the 2 upper blower/evaporator housing bolts.
      12.  
      13. Remove the 2 lower blower/evaporator housing-to-bulkhead nuts.
      14.  
      15. Remove the blower/evaporator housing.
      16.

    13. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
    14.  
    15. Remove the temperature control cable from the heater housing.
    16.  
    17. Remove the 2 lower heater housing nuts and the upper heater housing-to-bulkhead nut.
    18.  
    19. Remove the heater housing.
    20.  
    21. Disassemble the heater housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Remove the seal from the heater core tube connections.
      2.  
      3. Remove the vent seal.
      4.  
      5. Remove the 2 wiring harness-to-heater servo screws.
      6.  
      7. Remove the 8 heater housing clips located on the servo side (left side).
      8.  
      9. Remove the left side of the heater housing.
      10.  
      11. Remove the 6 heater housing assembly clips.
      12.  
      13. Remove the 4 heater core tube mounting bracket screws and the bracket.
      14.  
      15. Remove the 8 remaining heater housing clips and disassemble the housings.
      16.  
      17. Remove the heater core from the housing.

      7. Install the hole cover plate and the 4 plate nuts.
      8.  
      9. Move the carpeting over the bulkhead.
      10.  
      11. Connect the 5 connectors to the bottom of the blower/evaporator housing.
      12.  
      13. Connect the fresh air control cable to the blower/evaporator housing inlet duct.

      After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait for at least 10 minutes for the air bag module to deplete its stored energy.

    3. Remove the driver-s side air bag and steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Position the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
      2.  
      3. Remove the 4 steering wheel-to-air bag module bolts.
      4.  
      5. Carefully, lift the air bag module and disconnect the electrical connector.
        CAUTION
        Place the air bag module in a safe location with the front facing upward.

      6.  
      7. Remove the steering wheel-to-steering column nut.
        NOTE
        If may be necessary to mark the steering wheel to steering column alignment.

      8.  
      9. Using a steering wheel puller, press the steering wheel from the steering column.
      10.

    5. Drain the cooling system into a clean container for reuse.
    6.  
    7. Discharge and recover the air conditioning system refrigerant.
    8.  
    9. Remove the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Remove both the rear and front consoles.
      2.  
      3. Remove the knee bolster assembly.
      4.  
      5. Remove the -T- bar section.
      6.  
      7. Remove the relay bracket.
      8.  
      9. Remove the turn signal assembly and the upper/lower steering column covers.
      10.  
      11. Remove the hood release handle lockscrew, the hood release handle and the cable assembly nut.
      12.  
      13. Remove the left side front pillar trim and the lower left side cover.
      14.  
      15. Remove the 2 left side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      16.  
      17. At the left side of the instrument panel, remove the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      18.  
      19. Remove the ashtray.
      20.  
      21. Remove the center panel trim.
      22.  
      23. Remove the ventilation control panel.
      24.  
      25. At the center of the windshield next to the windshield, remove the cap and the mounting bolt.
      26.  
      27. " Remove the right side front pillar trim and the lower right side cover.
      28.  
      29. Remove the 2 right side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      30.  
      31. At the right side of the instrument panel, remove the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.

      33. Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts and lower the steering column.
      34.  
      35. Disconnect the instrument panel electrical connectors.
      36.  
      37. Remove the instrument panel.

    11. Remove the blower/evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Disconnect the air conditioning refrigerant lines from the evaporator core and discard the gaskets. Plug the openings to prevent contamination.
      2.  
      3. Disconnect the fresh air control cable from the blower/evaporator housing inlet duct.
      4.  
      5. Disconnect the 5 connectors from the bottom of the blower/evaporator housing.
      6.  
      7. Move the carpeting from the bulkhead to gain access to the hole cover plate.
      8.  
      9. Remove the 4 hole cover plate nuts and the plate.
      10.  
      11. Remove the 2 upper blower/evaporator housing bolts.
      12.  
      13. Remove the 2 lower blower/evaporator housing-to-bulkhead nuts.
      14.  
      15. Remove the blower/evaporator housing.
      16.

    13. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
    14.  
    15. Remove the temperature control cable from the heater housing.
    16.  
    17. Remove the 2 lower heater housing nuts and the upper heater housing-to-bulkhead nut.

    19. Remove the heater housing.
    20.  
    21. Disassemble the heater housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Remove the seal from the heater core tube connections.
      2.  
      3. Remove the vent seal.
      4.  
      5. Remove the 2 wiring harness-to-heater servo screws.
      6.  
      7. Remove the 8 heater housing clips located on the servo side (left side).
      8.  
      9. Remove the left side of the heater housing.
      10.  
      11. Remove the 6 heater housing assembly clips.
      12.  
      13. Remove the 4 heater core tube mounting bracket screws and the bracket.
      14.  
      15. Remove the 8 remaining heater housing clips and disassemble the housings.
      16.  
      17. Remove the heater core from the housing.

    To install:

    1. Assemble the heater housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the heater core to the housing.
      2.  
      3. Assemble the housings and install the 8 remaining heater housing clips.
      4.  
      5. Install the heater core tube mounting bracket and the 4 bracket screws.
      6.  
      7. Install the 6 heater housing assembly clips.
      8.  
      9. Install the left side of the heater housing.
      10.  
      11. Install the 8 heater housing clips located on the servo side (left side).
      12.  
      13. Install the 2 wiring harness-to-heater servo screws.
      14.  
      15. Install the vent seal.
      16.  
      17. Install the seal to the heater core tube connections.
      18.

    3. Install the heater housing.
    4.  
    5. Install the 2 lower heater housing nuts and the upper heater housing-to-bulkhead nut.
    6.  
    7. Install the temperature control cable to the heater housing.
    8.  
    9. Connect the heater hoses to the heater core.
    10.  
    11. Install the blower/evaporator housing by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the blower/evaporator housing.
      2.  
      3. Install the 2 lower blower/evaporator housing-to-bulkhead nuts.
      4.  
      5. Install the 2 upper blower/evaporator housing bolts.
      6.  
      7. Install the hole cover plate and the 4 plate nuts.
      8.  
      9. Move the carpeting over the bulkhead.
      10.  
      11. Connect the 5 connectors to the bottom of the blower/evaporator housing.
      12.  
      13. Connect the fresh air control cable to the blower/evaporator housing inlet duct.
      14.  
      15. Using new gaskets, connect the air conditioning refrigerant lines to the evaporator core.
      16.

    13. Install the instrument panel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the instrument panel.
      2.  
      3. Connect the instrument panel electrical connectors.
      4.  
      5. Install the steering column and lower the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
      6.  
      7. At the right side of the instrument panel, install the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      8.  
      9. Install the 2 right side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      10.  
      11. Install the right side front pillar trim and the lower right side cover.
      12.  
      13. At the center of the windshield next to the windshield, install the cap and the mounting bolt.
      14.  
      15. Install the ventilation control panel.
      16.  
      17. Install the center panel trim.
      18.  
      19. Install the ashtray.
      20.  
      21. At the left side of the instrument panel, install the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
      22.  
      23. Install the 2 left side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
      24.  
      25. Install the lower left side cover and the left side front pillar trim.
      26.  
      27. Install the cable assembly nut, the hood release handle and the hood release handle lockscrew.
      28.  
      29. Install the turn signal assembly and the upper/lower steering column covers.
      30.  
      31. Install the relay bracket.
      32.  
      33. Install the -T- bar section.
      34.  
      35. Install the knee bolster assembly.
      36.  
      37. Install both the rear and front consoles.
      38.

    15. Evacuate and charge the air conditioning system refrigerant.
    16.  
    17. Refill the cooling system.
    18.  
    19. Install the driver-s side air bag and steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
      1. Install the steering wheel to the steering column.
      2.  
      3. Install the steering wheel-to-steering column nut and torque the nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
      4.  
      5. Carefully, install the air bag module and connect the electrical connector.
      6.  
      7. Install the 4 steering wheel-to-air bag module bolts and torque to 72-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
      8.

    21. Connect the negative battery cable.
    22.  
    23. Run the engine to normal operating temperatures; then, check the climate control operation and check for leaks.
