Removal & Installation



  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    After disconnecting the negative battery cable, wait for at least 10 minutes for the air bag module to deplete its stored energy.

  4.  
  5. Remove the driver-s side air bag and steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Position the front wheels in the straight-ahead position.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 4 steering wheel-to-air bag module bolts.
    4.  
    5. Carefully, lift the air bag module and disconnect the electrical connector.
      CAUTION
      Place the air bag module in a safe location with the front facing upward.

    6.  
    7. Remove the steering wheel-to-steering column nut.
      NOTE
      If may be necessary to mark the steering wheel to steering column alignment.

    8.  
    9. Using a steering wheel puller, press the steering wheel from the steering column.
    10.

  7. Remove both the rear and front consoles.
  8.  
  9. Remove the knee bolster assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the -T- bar section.
  12.  
  13. Remove the relay bracket.
  14.  
  15. Remove the turn signal assembly and the upper/lower steering column covers.
  16.  
  17. Remove the hood release handle lockscrew, the hood release handle and the cable assembly nut.
  18.  
  19. Remove the left side front pillar trim and the lower left side cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the 2 left side -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
  22.  
  23. At the left side of the instrument panel, remove the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
  24.  
  25. Remove the ashtray.
  26.  
  27. Remove the center panel trim.
  28.  
  29. Remove the ventilation control panel.
  30.  
  31. At the center of the windshield next to the windshield, remove the cap and the mounting bolt.
  32.  
  33. Remove the right side front pillar trim and the lower right side cover.
  34.  
  35. Remove the 2 right side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
  36.  
  37. At the right side of the instrument panel, remove the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
  38.  
  39. Remove the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts and lower the steering column.
  40.  
  41. Disconnect the instrument panel electrical connectors.
  42.  
  43. Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
  44.  

To install:

  1. Install the instrument panel.
  2.  
  3. Connect the instrument panel electrical connectors.
  4.  
  5. Install the steering column and lower the steering column-to-instrument panel bolts. Torque the bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  6.  
  7. At the right side of the instrument panel, install the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
  8.  
  9. Install the 2 right side of the -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
  10.  
  11. Install the right side front pillar trim and the lower right side cover.
  12.  
  13. At the center of the windshield next to the windshield, install the cap and the mounting bolt.
  14.  
  15. Install the ventilation control panel.
  16.  
  17. Install the center panel trim.
  18.  
  19. Install the ashtray.
  20.  
  21. At the left side of the instrument panel, install the 3 instrument panel-to-chassis bolts.
  22.  
  23. Install the 2 left side -T- bar-to-chassis bolts.
  24.  
  25. Install the lower left side cover and the left side front pillar trim.
  26.  
  27. Install the cable assembly nut, the hood release handle and the hood release handle lockscrew.
  28.  
  29. Install the turn signal assembly and the upper/lower steering column covers.
  30.  
  31. Install the relay bracket.
  32.  
  33. Install the -T- bar section.
  34.  
  35. Install the knee bolster assembly.
  36.  
  37. Install both the rear and front consoles.
  38.  
  39. Install the driver-s side air bag and steering wheel by performing the following procedure:
    1. Install the steering wheel to the steering column.
    2.  
    3. Install the steering wheel-to-steering column nut and torque the nut to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Carefully, install the air bag module and connect the electrical connector.
    6.  
    7. Install the 4 steering wheel-to-air bag module bolts and torque to 72-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).

  41. Connect the negative battery cable.
