Removal & Installation

Center Link



  1. Raise and support vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove both front tire and wheel assemblies.
  4.  
  5. Remove the cotter pins from the four joints of the center link.
  6.  
  7. Remove nuts from the four joints of the center link.
  8.  
  9. Using a ball joint puller, separate right inner tie rod end assembly from center link.
  10.  
  11. Using a ball joint puller, separate left inner tie rod end assembly from center link.
  12.  
  13. Using a ball joint puller, separate pitman arm from center link.
  14.  
  15. Using a ball joint puller, separate idler arm from center link.
  16.  
  17. Remove the center link from the vehicle.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Position center link under vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install left inner tie rod end assembly on center link; install the nut sufficiently tight to hold tie rod end assembly in place.
  4.  
  5. Install right inner tie rod end assembly on center link; install nut sufficiently tight to hold tie rod end assembly in position.
  6.  
  7. Install idler arm on center link; install nut sufficiently tight to hold idler arm in position
  8.  
  9. Install pitman arm on center link; install nut sufficiently tight to hold pitman arm in position.
  10.  
  11. Tighten the left tie rod end joint nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
  12.  
  13. Tighten the right tie rod end joint nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
  14.  
  15. Tighten the idler arm joint nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
  16.  
  17. Tighten the pitman arm joint nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
  18.  
  19. Install the tire and wheel assemblies.
  20.  
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Check and adjust front wheel toe setting as required.
  24.  

Idler Arm



  1. Raise and support vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove right tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove cotter pin from nut at center link end of idler arm.
  6.  
  7. Remove nut from center link end of idler arm.
  8.  
  9. Remove nut from idler arm assembly end of idler arm.
  10.  
  11. Using ball joint puller, separate idler arm from center link.
  12.  
  13. Using pitman arm puller, separate idler arm from idler arm assembly.
  14.  
  15. Remove the idler arm.
  16.  
  17. If assembly shaft removal is required; remove the four nuts, washers and bolts that attach idler arm assembly shaft to chassis and remove the shaft assembly.
  18.  

To install:

  1. If shaft assembly was removed, position the shaft assembly over mounting holes and install four bolts, washers, and nuts. Tighten the mounting nuts to 159 ft. lbs. (215 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Position the idler arm on the center link.
  4.  
  5. Install nut at center link end of idler arm and tighten nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install a new cotter pin through nut at the center link.
  8.  
  9. Install the idler arm on the shaft of idler arm assembly with the retaining nut and lockwasher. Tighten the nut to 166 ft. lbs. (225 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle
  12.  
  13. Check and adjust front wheel toe setting as required.
  14.  

Pitman Arm



  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the left tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Mark the pitman arm and shaft to show correct position of pitman arm on steering gear.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin from nut at center link joint.
  8.  
  9. Remove the nut from center link joint
  10.  
  11. Remove the nut and lockwasher from steering gear shaft.
  12.  
  13. Using a ball joint puller, separate the pitman arm from the center link.
  14.  
  15. Using a pitman arm puller, separate the pitman arm from the steering gear.
  16.  
  17. Remove the pitman arm.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Position the pitman arm on the steering gear and the center link.
  2.  
  3. Install the nut at center link joint and tighten to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install a new cotter pin through nut at the center link joint.
  6.  
  7. Install a nut and lockwasher on steering gear shaft and tighten to 166 ft. lbs. (225 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the left tire and wheel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12.  
  13. Check and adjust front wheel toe setting as required.
  14.  

Tie Rod



  1. Raise and support vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the appropriate tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Mark tie rod end assembly inboard and outboard ends to aid in installation.
  6.  
  7. Remove cotter pin at each end of tie rod end assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove nut at each tie rod end assembly.
  10.  
  11. At the outboard end, separate tie rod end assembly from axle knuckle arm using a ball joint puller.
  12.  
  13. At the inboard end, separate tie rod end assembly from center link using a ball joint puller.
  14.  
  15. Remove tie rod end assembly.
  16.  

To install:

  1. Position tie rod end assembly on axle knuckle arm and on center link.
  2.  
  3. Install nut at each tie rod end assembly. Tighten nut to 36 ft. lbs. (49Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install new cotter pin through nut at each end of idler arm assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Check and adjust front wheel toe setting as required.
