Electric Fan Switch

Removal & Installation

The engine coolant temperature sensor and engine control module (ECM) control the cooling fan operation.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.
  3. Drain the cooling system.
  4.
  5. Remove the sender electrical connector.
  6.
  7. Remove the sender from its mounting.
  8.

To install:

  1. Thread the sender into the engine block and tighten to 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm).
  2.
  3. Connect the electrical connector to the sender.
  4.
  5. Refill the cooling system.
  6.
  7. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  8.
  9. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Testing

The engine coolant temperature sensor and engine control module (ECM) control the cooling fan operation.

  1. Inspect the sensor connector connection, check terminal for poor connections, loose wires, bent, broken or corroded pins, and then verify that the connector is always securely fastened.
  2.
  3. Remove the coolant temperature sensor from the engine.
  4.
  5. Place the sensing portion of the sensor in water and using an ohmmeter measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 3.
  6.
  7. If the resistance value is not as shown in the coolant temperature sensor resistance table, replace the coolant temperature sensor.
