Removal & Installation



Driver's Side

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1995-1999

  1. Remove the steering wheel pad.
    NOTE
    If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.

    1. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Remove the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers.
    4.  
    5. Using a TORX® socket wrench, loosen the 2 TORX® screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    6.  
    7. Pull out the wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the connector.
      CAUTION
      When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.


      CAUTION
      Never disassemble the wheel pad.


      NOTE
      When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

To install:

  1. Install the steering wheel pad.
    NOTE
    Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.


    NOTE
    Make sure the wheel pad is installed with the specified torque.


    NOTE
    If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects on the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.


    NOTE
    When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and that they are not pinched between other parts.

    1. Connect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Connect the airbag connector.
    4.  
    5. Install the steering wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the TORX® screws is caught on the screw case.
    6.  
    7. Using a TORX® socket wrench, torque the 2 screws. Tighten screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers.

Passenger's Side

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1994


CAUTION
Work must be started after 90 second from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.


NOTE
If the wiring connector of the supplemental restraint system is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, diagnostic trouble codes will be recorded.


NOTE
Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new parts.

  1. Disconnect the air bag connector.
    1. Refer to the PRECAUTIONS in this section.
    2.  
    3. Remove the glove compartment finish plate inside the glove compartment.
      NOTE
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    4.  
    5. Pull up the connector.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the airbag connector.
    8.

  3. Remove the following parts as outlined under Instrument Panel in the Body Section:
    1. Glove compartment door.
    2.  
    3. Glove compartment.
    4.  
    5. No.2 under cover.
    6.  
    7. RH lower pad.
    8.  
    9. Lock striker plate.
    10.

  5. Remove the front passenger air bag assembly.
    1. Remove the 3 bolts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front passenger airbag assembly.
      CAUTION
      Do not store the front passenger airbag assembly with the airbag door facing down.


      CAUTION
      Never disassemble the front passenger airbag assembly.

To install:

  1. Install the front passenger air bag assembly.
    1. Install the front passenger airbag assembly with the 3 bolts. Tighten bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
      NOTE
      Make sure the front passenger airbag assembly is installed to the specified torque.


      NOTE
      If the front passenger airbag assembly has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the front passenger airbag assembly with a new one.


      NOTE
      When installing the front passenger airbag assembly, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

    2.  
    3. Install the lock striker plate with the nut and the 2 bolts. Tighten bolts to 48 inch lbs. (5.5 Nm).

  3. Install the following parts as outlined under Instrument Panel in the Body Section.
    1. RH lower pad.
    2.  
    3. No.2 under cover.
    4.  
    5. Glove compartment.
    6.  
    7. Glove compartment door.
      NOTE
      When installing the glove compartment, pull the airbag wire harnesses out from the glove compartment opening hole.


      NOTE
      Do not pull the airbag wire harnesses too strongly.

  5. Connect the air bag connector.
    1. Connect the airbag connector.
    2.  
    3. Put the connector on the glove compartment finish plate.
    4.  
    5. Install the glove compartment finish plate to the glove compartment.

NOTE
If the wiring connector of the SRS is disconnected and the ignition switch is at ON or ACC position, DTCs will be recorded.


NOTE
Never use the airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new parts.

  1. Disconnect the air bag connector.
    1. Remove the glove compartment door finish plate inside the instrument panel box.
      NOTE
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    3. Pull up the connector.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the front passenger airbag connector.

  3. Remove the instrument panel as outlined in the Body Section.

  5. Remove the front passenger air bag assembly.
    1. Remove the No.2 side defroster nozzle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 5 nuts, then remove the front passenger airbag assembly.
      CAUTION
      Do not store the front passenger airbag assembly with the airbag deployment side facing downward.


      CAUTION
      Never disassemble the front passenger airbag assembly.

To install:


NOTE
Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace them with new parts.

  1. Install the front passenger air bag assembly.
    1. Install the front passenger airbag assembly to the instrument panel.
      CAUTION
      Make sure that no foreign objects are trapped between the airbag bag, and within the module.


      CAUTION
      Do not damage the strap when installing the module.


      NOTE
      If the front passenger airbag assembly has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the front passenger airbag assembly with a new one.

    3. Install the No.2 side defroster nozzle.
    4.

  3. Install the instrument panel.
    1. Install the 2 bolts to instrument panel reinforcement. Tighten bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
      NOTE
      Make sure the front passenger airbag assembly is installed to the specified torque.


      NOTE
      When installing the instrument panel, take care that the airbag wire harness does not interfere with other parts and is not pinched between other parts.


      NOTE
      When installing the instrument panel box, carefully put out the airbag wire harness from the glove compartment upper hole.

  5. Connect the air bag connector.
    1. Connect the airbag connector.
    2.  
    3. Put the connector on the glove compartment door finish plate.
    4.  
    5. Install the glove compartment door finish plate to the instrument panel box.

Side Air Bag

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1995-1999


NOTE
If the wiring connector of the SRS is disconnected and the ignition switch is at ON or ACC position, DTCs will be recorded.


NOTE
Never use the airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace them with new parts.

  1. Remove the front seat.
    1. Remove the bolt and seat belt lap outer anchor.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 4 bolts.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the side airbag connector and power seat connector at the position shown in the illustration.
      NOTE
      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    7. Remove the front seat.
    8.

  3. Remove the front seatback board.
    1. Remove the 2 screws and front seatback board.
    2.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the side air bag assembly.
    1. Remove the 2 yellow hooks and a black hook at the position shown in the illustration.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 2 clamps for wire harness of the side airbag installed under the seat, then pull out the wire harness.
    4.  
    5. Remove the side airbag connector from the bracket under the seat.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 2 nuts at the position shown in the illustration and remove the side airbag assembly.
      CAUTION
      Do not store the side airbag assembly with the airbag deployment side facing down.


      CAUTION
      Never disassemble the side airbag assembly.

To install:


NOTE
Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace them with new parts.

  1. Install the side air bag assembly.
    1. Install the 2 nuts and side airbag assembly to the seatback frame. Tighten nuts to 6.7 ft. lbs. (9.0 Nm).
      CAUTION
      Check that hook shown in the illustration -A- is hanging on the seat frame securely before installing the side airbag assembly.


      CAUTION
      If the hook is not securely hang, there is fear of incorrect deploying caused by sliding of seat cover position.


      NOTE
      Make sure that the side airbag assembly is installed with the specified torque.


      NOTE
      If the side airbag assembly has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects in the case or connector, replace the side airbag assembly with a new one.


      NOTE
      When installing the side airbag assembly, take care it is not pinched between other parts.


      NOTE
      Side airbag assembly is designed to inflate breaking up the seams of the seatback cover. The position is made to be held by installing the side airbag assembly with the hook onto the seat frame.

    3. Hang the hooks and onto the seat frame.
      CAUTION
      As well as one hook, if not installing two hooks securely there is fear of incorrect deploying.

    4.  
    5. Hang the hook onto the seat frame and pass the wire harness through as shown in the illustration, then install clamps at the 2 positions under the seat.
    6.  
    7. Install the side airbag connector to the bracket under the seat.
    8.

  3. Install the front seatback board.
    1. Install front seatback board to the front seat.
    2.  

  4.  
  5. Install the front seat.
    1. Mount the seat to the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Connect the power seat connector and side airbag connector.
    4.  
    5. Install the outer bolt and inner bolt on the front side after sliding the seat to the rearmost position. Tighten the bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the bolts on the rear side temporarily, from the bolt on the inner side tighten them completely. Tighten bolts to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the seat belt lap outer anchor. Tighten anchor to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
