Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1993-1995

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
  2.  
  3. Drain the engine coolant from the radiator.
  4.  
  5. Remove the intake air connector.
  6.  
  7. Remove the high tension cord cover by removing the two bolts.
  8.  
  9. Remove the right hand engine wire cover by removing the bolt.
  10.  
  11. Remove the left hand engine wire cover by removing the two bolts.
  12.  
  13. Remove the right hand No. 3 timing belt cover by removing the four bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the left hand No. 3 timing belt cover by removing the four bolts.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the radiator hose from the water inlet pipe.
  18.  
  19. Remove the drive belt idler pulley by removing the bolt and cover plate.
  20.  
  21. Remove the right and left hand No. 2 timing belt covers.
  22.  
  23. Disconnect the high tension cords from the distributor caps. Mark the position of the high tension cords for installation.
  24.  
  25. Loosen the three bolts and remove the distributor cap. Remove both caps. Make sure to replace each side to its original position.
  26.  
  27. Mark the position of the rotor to the engine. Also place matchmarks on the distributor and engine for proper alignment when installing the distributor.
  28.  
  29. Loosen the two bolts and remove the distributor rotor. Remove both rotors. Make sure to replace each side to its original position.

  31. Remove the distributor housings as follows:
    1. For the right side, disconnect the camshaft position sensor connector.
    2.  
    3. Remove the three bolts and the distributor housing. Remove both distributors. Make sure to replace each side to its original position.

To install:

  1. Install the right and left hand distributor housings by installing the three bolts for each distributor. When installing the distributor, align the marks on the distributor and the engine. When installing the distributor, make sure to install the distributor rotor as follows:
    1. Align the protrusion of the distributor rotor with the groove the camshaft timing pulley.
    2.  
    3. Install the distributor rotor with the two bolts. Install the two distributor rotors.

  3. Install the distributor cap with the three bolts. Install the two distributor caps. Torque the bolts to 34 inch lbs. (4 Nm).

  5. Connect the high tension cord to the distributor caps.
  6.  
  7. Install the right hand No. 2 timing belt cover, then tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the left hand No. 2 timing belt cover.
  10.  
  11. Install the idler pulley and cover plate with the bolt. Torque the bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Connect the radiator hose to the water inlet pipe.
  14.  
  15. Install the right hand No. 3 timing belt cover by installing the gaskets and four bolts.
  16.  
  17. Install the left hand No. 3 timing belt cover by installing the gaskets and four bolts.
  18.  
  19. Install the right hand engine wire cover.
  20.  
  21. Install the left hand engine wire cover.
  22.  
  23. Install the intake air connector.
  24.  
  25. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  26.  
  27. Fill the engine coolant.
  28.  
  29. Warm up the engine and check the timing.

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1996-1997

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    CAUTION
    Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position and the negative battery cable is disconnected.

  3. Remove the No. 2 timing belt covers.
  4.  
  5. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the distributor caps.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the three bolts and remove the distributor cap. Remove both caps.
  8.  
  9. Remove the two rubber caps from each distributor cap.
  10.  
  11. Loosen the bolt and remove the distributor rotor. Remove both distributor rotors.
  12.  
  13. Remove the No. 2 distributor housing by removing the camshaft position sensor connector and removing the three bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the bolt, screw and camshaft position sensor.
  16.  

To install:

Timing disturbed:

  1. Make sure that the No. 1 cylinder is in TDC of the compression stroke.
    1. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the timing mark 0 of the timing chain cover.
    2.  
    3. Check that the timing marks on the camshafts align with the timing marks.
    4.  
    5. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360 degrees) and align the crankshaft pulley groove with the timing mark 0 of the timing chain cover.
    6.

  3. Install the camshaft position sensor with the bolt and screw. Install the both sensors and torque the bolt to 34 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
    NOTE
    The No. 1 distributor housing is marked with an L and the No. 2 with an R.

  5. Install the left distributor housing with the three bolts. Torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm). The two inner bolts are 3.15 inches and the outer bolt is 1.50 inches.
  6.  
  7. Install the right distributor housing with the three bolts. Torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm). The two inner bolts are 3.78 inches and the outer bolt is 1.50 inches.
  8.  
  9. Align the protrusion of the distributor rotor with the groove of the camshaft timing pulley. Install both rotors and torque the bolts to 34 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Connect the camshaft position sensor connectors.
  12.  
  13. Install the distributor cap and torque the three bolts to 34 inch lbs. (4 Nm). Install both caps. Install the two rubber caps to each distributor cap.
  14.  
  15. Connect the spark plug wires to the distributors.
  16.  
  17. Install the No. 2 timing belt covers.
  18.  
  19. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and allow normal operating temperature to be reached.
  20.  
  21. Check the ignition timing.
  22.  

Timing not disturbed:

  1. Install the camshaft position sensor with the bolt and screw. Install the both sensors and torque the bolt to 34 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
    NOTE
    The No. 1 distributor housing is marked with an L and the No. 2 with an R.

  3. Install the left distributor housing with the three bolts. Torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm). The two inner bolts are 3.15 inches and the outer bolt is 1.50 inches.
  4.  
  5. Install the right distributor housing with the three bolts. Torque the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm). The two inner bolts are 3.78 inches and the outer bolt is 1.50 inches.
  6.  
  7. Align the protrusion of the distributor rotor with the groove of the camshaft timing pulley. Install both rotors and torque the bolts to 34 inch lbs. (4 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the camshaft position sensor connectors.
  10.  
  11. Install the distributor cap and torque the three bolts to 34 inch lbs. (4 Nm). Install both caps. Install the two rubber caps to each distributor cap.
  12.  
  13. Connect the spark plug wires to the distributors.
  14.  
  15. Install the No. 2 timing belt covers.
  16.  
  17. Connect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and allow normal operating temperature to be reached.
  18.  
  19. Check the ignition timing.
