Removal & Installation
Moonroof (Sliding Roof)

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1990-1992

  1. Disconnect battery cable from negative terminal.
    CAUTION
    Work must be started after approx. 30 seconds or longer from the time the ignition switch is turned to the -LOCK- position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.

  2.  
  3. Remove the Map light.
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove map light lens. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    2.  
    3. Remove three screws and the light.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connector.
    6.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the following parts as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section:
    1. Front pillar garnish.
    2.  
    3. Center visor and inner rear view mirror.
    4.  
    5. Holders.
    6.  
    7. Front roof headlining as outlined in this section.
    8.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the Sliding Roof Garnishes Using a screwdriver, remove four sliding roof garnishes. Do not scratch the glass or garnish with the screwdriver. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
  8.  
  9. Remove the Sliding Roof Glass.
    1. Remove six nuts and shims. Make sure of the number of shims.
    2.  
    3. Pull the glass upward to remove it.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the Drive Gear Assembly.
    1. Remove four bolts and the gear assembly.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connectors from the gear.

  13. Remove the Wind Deflector.
    1. Slide the drive cable backward.
    2.  
    3. Remove four screws and the deflector.
    4.

  15. Remove the Cable Guide Casing.
    1. Remove two screws and the guide rail cover.
    2.  
    3. Remove two screws from the drive rail.
    4.  
    5. Slide the drive cable forward.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect front side of the drain hose. Disconnect the drain hose from the sliding roof housing side.
    8.  
    9. Remove the sliding roof control relay.
    10.  
    11. Remove the two nuts from the sliding roof housing.
    12.  
    13. Remove the cable guide casing gradually from both sides.
      NOTE
      Be careful that the oily cable doesn-t fall off.

  17. Remove the Roof Drip Channel.
    1. Remove two screws.
    2.  
    3. Pull the channel forward to remove it.
    4.

  19. Remove the Sunshade Trim as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section.
    1. While raising the drive rail, pull the trim forward to remove it.
    2.

  21. Remove the Drive Rail.
    1. Slide the drive cable forward.
    2.  
    3. Slide the rail forward and disconnect the clamp, then remove it.
    4.

To install:

  1. Install the following parts:
    1. Drive rail.
    2.  
    3. Sunshade trim as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section
    4.  
    5. Roof drip channel.
    6.

  3. Install the cable guide casing.
    1. Insert the cable to the casing and install the cable guide casing gradually to both sides.
    2.  
    3. Insert the casing to the drive rail.
    4.  
    5. Install the two nuts to the sliding roof housing.
    6.  
    7. Install the sliding roof control relay.
    8.  
    9. Connect the front side of drain hose. Place the knobs of clips to upper side.
    10.  
    11. Install two screws and guide rail cover.
    12.  
    13. Install two screws to the drive rail.
    14.

  5. Install the roof drip channel.
    1. Pull the channel forward to remove it.
    2.  
    3. Install two screws.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Install the wind deflector.
    1. Install four screws and the deflector.
    2.  
    3. Slide the drive cable backward.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Adjust the drive rail. Adjust the drive rail to a closed and tilted down position.
    1. Using a screwdriver, slide the link forward or backward to align the two marks.
    2.  
    3. Slide the bracket to the forefront with your hand.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Adjust and install drive gear assembly.
    1. Install the screw and cam plate cover.
    2.  
    3. Install the large screw, washers and shims.
    4.  
    5. Turn the drive shaft by screwdriver to align the housing and gear point mark.
    6.  
    7. Install cam plate cover with a screw.
    8.  
    9. Install the drive gear assembly with four bolts.
    10.  
    11. Connect the connectors.
    12.

  13. Install the sliding glass.
    1. Confirm that the lip part of the weatherstrip housing is not twisted.
    2.  
    3. Confirm that the clearance between the left and right of the sliding roof glass and roof panel are equal. Install six nuts and shims.
    4.  

  14.  
  15. Inspect the sliding roof glass alignment as outlined under the Moonroof Fitting Adjustments.
  16.  
  17. Install the following parts as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section.:
    1. Sliding roof garnishes
    2.  
    3. Front roof headlining
    4.  
    5. Holders
    6.  
    7. Center visor and inner rear view mirror
    8.  
    9. Front pillar garnish
    10.  
    11. Front seat belt shoulder anchor bolt. Tighten bolt to32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)
    12.  
    13. Map light

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1994

  1. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal.

    1. Using a screwdriver, remove map light lens. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    3. Remove three screws and the light.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connector.

  5. Remove the following parts as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section.:
    1. Front pillar garnish
    2.  
    3. Rear seat cushion, rear seat inner belt and the back
    4.  
    5. Roof side inner garnish

    9. Holders

    11. Front roof headlining as outlined in this section.

  7. Remove the sliding roof garnishes.
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove four sliding roof garnishes. Do not scratch the glass or garnish with the screwdriver. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    2.  
    3. Remove roof headlining.
    4.

  9. Remove the sliding roof glass.
    1. Remove six nuts and shims. Make sure of the number of shims.
    2.  
    3. Pull the glass upward to remove it.
    4.

  11. Remove the drive gear assembly.
    1. Remove four bolts and the gear assembly.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connectors from the gear.

  13. Remove the sliding roof housing.
    1. Disconnect the four drain hoses from the housing.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connectors.

    5. Remove ten bolts.
    6.  
    7. While supporting the housing, remove two bolts and two nuts.

  15. Remove the wind deflector.
    1. Slide the drive cable backward.
    2.  
    3. Remove four screws and the deflector.
    4.

    4.  
    5. Slide the drive cable forward.
    6.

    9. Remove the sliding roof control relay.
    10.  
    11. Remove the two nuts from the sliding roof housing.
    12.  
    13. Remove the cable guide casing gradually from both sides.
      NOTE
      Be careful that the oily cable doesn-t fall off.

  19. Remove the roof drip channel.
    1. Remove two screws.

    3. Pull the channel forward to remove it.

    1. While raising the drive rail, pull the trim forward to remove it.

    1. Slide the drive cable forward.

  25. Remove the sliding roof housing weatherstrip.
    1. Pry loose the weatherstrip by hand.

To install:

  1. Install the following parts:
    1. Sliding roof housing weatherstrip
    2.  
    3. Drive rail
    4.  
    5. Sunshade trim
    6.  
    7. Roof drip channel
    8.

  3. Install the cable guide casing.
    1. Insert the cable to the casing and install the cable guide casing gradually to both sides.
    2.  
    3. Insert the casing to the drive rail as shown.
    4.  
    5. Install the two nuts to the sliding roof housing.
    6.  
    7. Install the sliding roof control relay.
    8.  
    9. Connect the front side of drain hose. Place the knobs of clips to upper side.
    10.  
    11. Install two screws and guide rail cover.
    12.  
    13. Install two screws to the drive rail.
    14.

  5. Install the roof drip channel.
  6.  
  7. Install the wind deflector.
  8.  
  9. Adjust the drive rail. Adjust the drive rail to a closed and tilted down position.
    1. Using a screwdriver, slide the link forward or backward to align the two marks.
    2.  
    3. Slide the bracket to the forefront with your hand.
    4.

  11. Adjust and install drive gear assembly.
    1. Install the screw and cam plate cover.
    2.  
    3. Install the large screw, washers and shims.
    4.  
    5. Turn the drive shaft by screwdriver to align the housing and gear point mark.
    6.  
    7. Install cam plate cover with a screw.
    8.  
    9. Install the drive gear assembly with four bolts.
    10.  
    11. Connect the connectors.

    Confirm that the lip part of the weatherstrip housing is not twisted.

  5. Remove the sliding roof glass.
    1. Remove the 4 nuts.
    2.  
    3. Pull the glass upward to remove it.
    4.

  7. Remove the sliding roof control relay and drive gear assembly.
    NOTE
    Remove the drive gear with the sliding roof full closed.

    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt and the relay.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 4 bolts and the drive gear assembly.
    6.  
    7. Remove the screw and cam plate cover.
    8.  
    9. Remove the large screw, washers and shims.
    10.  
    11. Turn the driveshaft with screwdriver to align the housing and gear point mark as shown. Install the cam plate cover and the screw.
      NOTE
      At the time of installation, please refer to the following: If the sliding roof position and drive gear assembly full close position are not matched, the sliding roof does not operate normally.

  9. Remove the sliding roof housing.
    1. Disconnect the 4 drain hoses from the housing.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 12 bolts and the bracket.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 6 nuts, then remove the housing.

To install:

  1. Install the sliding roof housing.
    1. Install the housing, then install the 6 nuts.
    2.  
    3. Install the 12 bolts and the bracket.
    4.  
    5. Connect the 4 drain hoses from the housing.
    6.

  3. Install the sliding roof control relay and drive gear assembly.
    1. Turn the drive shaft with screwdriver to align the housing and gear point mark. Install the cam plate cover and the screw.
    2.  
    3. Install the large screw, washers and shims.
    4.  
    5. Install the screw and cam plate cover.
    6.  
    7. Install the 4 bolts and the drive gear assembly.
    8.  
    9. Install the bolt and the relay.
    10.  
    11. Connect the connectors.
    12.

  5. Install the sliding roof glass.
    1. Push the glass downward to install it.
    2.  
    3. Install the 4 nuts.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Install the sliding roof garnish.

    Do not scratch the glass or garnish with the screwdriver.
     
    Tape a screwdriver tip before use.
     

    1. Install the roof headlining.
    2.  
    3. Using the screwdriver, install 4 sliding roof garnishes.

  9. Install the following parts:

Moonroof (Sliding Roof) Fitting Adjustments

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1990-1992, 1994

  1. Inspect the sliding roof glass alignment.
    1. Start the engine and check the operation time of the sliding roof. Operation time: Approx. 5 seconds.
    2.  
    3. Check for abnormal noise or binding during operation.
    4.  
    5. With the sliding roof fully closed, check for water leakage.
    6.  
    7. Check for a difference in level between the sliding roof weatherstrip and roof panel.

      Front end: -0.7 ± 1 mm (-0.016 ± 0.039 in.)
       
      Rear end: +0.3 ± 1 mm (0.024 ± 0.039 in.)

If the sliding roof does not operate:

  1. Remove the control switch cover.
  2.  
  3. Remove the large screw inside.
    NOTE
    Be careful not to lose the spring washer or shim.

  4.  
  5. Manually operate the moon roof by inserting a special crank-shaped screwdriver into the hole and turning the drive shaft.
  6.  

  1. Remove the sliding roof garnishes.
    1. Before making adjustments, remove the left and right sliding roof garnishes.
      NOTE
      After adjustment, reinstall the sliding roof garnishes.

    2.

  3. To adjust the level difference.
    1. Adjust by increasing or decreasing the number of shims between the bracket and sliding roof.
    2.  

  4.  
  5. To adjust the forward or rearward.
    1. Adjust by loosening the sliding roof installation nuts, and move the sliding roof bracket forward and backward.
    2.  
    3. When the front or rear alignment is not correct, remove the glass and adjust the drive rail.
    4.  
    5. Using a screwdriver, slide the link forward or backward to align the two marks as shown.
    6.  
    7. Slide the bracket to the forefront with your hand.
    8.

  7. To adjust the right or left.
    1. Adjust by loosening the sliding roof rear shoe installation nuts, and move the sliding roof to the right and left.
    2.  

  8.  
  9. To adjust the clearance (Difference in left and right clearance).
    1. Adjust by loosening the sliding roof installation nuts and readjust the sliding roof to the proper position.
    2.

Rear Seat

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1990-1992, 1994

  1. Remove the rear seat cushion.
    1. Pull the front left and right levers of lock hooks forward and pull up the seat cushion.
    2.  
    3. With seat heater, disconnect the connectors..
    4.  

  2.  
  3. Remove the rear seat inner belt as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear seat back.
    1. Remove four bolts.
    2.  
    3. With seat heater, disconnect the connectors.
    4.  
    5. Pull up the seat back to remove it.
    6.  

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear seat back.
    1. Push down the rear seat back and install four bolts. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
    2.  
    3. With seat heater, connect the connectors.
    4.  

  2.  
  3. Install the rear seat inner belt as outlined in this section.
  4.  
  5. Install the rear seat cushion.
    1. Insert the seat cushion wire to seat back.
    2.  
    3. With seat heater, connect the connectors.
      NOTE
      Before installation, confirm the rear seat belts are positioned as shown.

    4.  
    5. Push down the cushion to install the levers to the body panel.
      NOTE
      Confirm that the seat is installed firmly.

    6.

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1995-1999

  1. Remove the seat cushion assembly.
  2.  
  3. Remove the seatback assembly.
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the rear seat belt from the belt guide as shown in the illustration.
    2.  
    3. Remove the LH and RH headrests.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 7 bolts, then raise the seatback assembly upward to remove the seatback assembly.
    6.

To install:

  1. Install the seatback assembly.
    1. Install the 7 bolts, then raise the seatback assembly upward to install the seatback assembly. Tighten bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the LH and RH headrests.
    4.  
    5. Using a screwdriver, install the rear seat belt from the belt guide.
    6.

  3. Install the seat cushion assembly.
  4.  

Rear Seat Belt

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1990-1992, 1994

  1. Remove the following parts:
    1. Rear seat back and cushion as outlined under Rear Seat in this section.
    2.  
    3. Rear scuff plate as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section. Using the screwdriver, push in the top of clip and remove two clips. Using the screwdriver, remove seven clips and remove it.
    4.

  3. Remove the roof side inner garnish.
    1. Remove the assist grip.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, remove seven clips and the garnish.
      NOTE
      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    4.

  5. Remove the rear seat outer belt.
    1. Remove the outer belt floor anchor bolt.
    2.  
    3. Remove the outer belt shoulder anchor bolt.
    4.  
    5. Remove the bolt and the retractor.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the rear seat inner belt.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear seat center belt.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the rear seat center belt. Place the anchor as shown, then install two bolts and the center belt. Torque: 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the rear seat outer belt.
    1. Place the claw of retractor bracket to body hole and install the bolt and the retractor. Tighten the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the outer belt shoulder anchor bolt. Tighten the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
      NOTE
      After installation, check that the anchor turns smoothly.

    4.  
    5. Install the garnish by tapping it in.
    6.  
    7. Put the claw of floor anchor plate in the panel hole and install the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    8.  

  4.  
  5. Install the following parts:
    1. Rear scuff plate as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section.
    2.  
    3. Rear seat back as outlined under Rear Seat in this section. Tighten bolt to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Install the rear seat inner belt. Tighten bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    NOTE
    After installing the belt, check the position of the belt.

  8.  
  9. Install the rear seat cushion as outlined under Rear Seat in this section.
    NOTE
    After installation, check that the seat belts are positioned.

Roof Headlining

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1990-1992, 1994

  1. Remove the following parts:

    Front pillar garnish as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section.
     
    Front roof headlining as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section.
     
    Rear seat back and cushion as outlined under Rear Seat in this section.
     
    Roof side inner garnish as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section.

  3. Remove the roof headlining.
    1. Disconnect four clips from the roof panel rear end.
    2.  
    3. Pull out the portion fitting around the sliding roof.
    4.  
    5. Using a clip remover, remove six clips and release the fastener tapes, then remove the headlining.
      NOTE
      Do not fold down the headlining.

Do not fold down the headlining.

  1. Install the roof headlining.
    1. Using a clip remover, install six clips and release the fastener tapes, then install the headlining.
    2.  
    3. Pull out the portion fitting around the sliding roof.
    4.  
    5. Connect four clips from the roof panel rear end.
    6.

  3. Install the following parts:

    Roof side inner garnish as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section.
     
    Rear seat back and cushion as outlined under Rear Seat in this section.
     
    Front roof headlining as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section.
     
    Front pillar garnish as outlined under Trim, Assist Grip and Visor in this section.

  5. Tighten the following to given specifications:
    1. Rear seat back bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Rear seat belt inner belt bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Front seat belt shoulder anchor bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    6.

Lexus LS400 1995-1999

  1. Remove the following parts:
    1. Front seat
    2.  
    3. Rear seat cushion
    4.  
    5. Rear seat belt floor anchors
    6.  
    7. Rear seatback
    8.  
    9. Front door scuff plates

    11. Rear door scuff plates
    12.  
    13. Rear seat side garnishes
    14.  
    15. High-mounted stop light
    16.  
    17. Speaker grille
    18.  
    19. Package tray trim

  3. Remove the rear personal light.
    1. Remove the screw.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, remove the light. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connector.
    6.

  5. Remove the spot light.
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the light. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    NOTE
    Paying enough attention remove the clip on the roof side inner garnish shown in the illustration. Otherwise, the roof side inner garnish or the front pillar garnish might be broken.

    1. Remove the front seat outer belt shoulder anchor.

    3. Remove the front pillar garnish.

  13. Remove the front roof headlining and roof headlining.
    1. Pull the headlining backward and remove the front roof headlining.

    3. Pull out the portion fitting around the sliding roof.

    5. Using a clip remover, remove the 10 clips and release the fastener tapes, then remove the headlining.
      NOTE
      Do not fold down the headlining.

  1. Install the front roof headlining and roof headlining.
    1. Using a clip remover, remove the 10 clips and release the fastener tapes, then install the headlining.

      NOTE
      Do not fold down the headlining.

Trim, Assist Grip & Visor

  1. Remove the front pillar garnish.
    1. Remove two screws and the assist grip.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front seat belt anchor bolt.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the upper side of roof side inner garnish.
    6.  
    7. Using a screwdriver, remove seven clips and pull the garnish upper side. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    8.

  3. Remove the front roof headlining.
    1. Using the screwdriver, remove map light lens.
    2.  
    3. Remove three screws.
    4.

  5. Remove two clips and map light.
    1. Disconnect the connector from the switch.

    3. Remove two screws and two holders.

    5. Using a screwdriver, remove center visor. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    7. Remove two screws and the inner rear view mirror.

    9. Remove four screws.

    11. Remove two clips with hand.

    13. Pull the headlining backward and remove it.

    1. Using the screwdriver, push in the top of clip and remove two clips.

    3. Using the screwdriver, remove seven clips and remove it.

  17. Remove the room partition trim.

    1. Using the screwdriver, remove two clips and speaker grille. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    3. Disconnect the connector from the speaker and the high mount stop light.

    5. Using a clip remover, remove two clips from the trim.
    6.  
    7. Pull the trim forward to remove it.
    8.

  21. Remove the front scuff plate. Using the screwdriver, remove nine clips and the plate. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

  23. Remove the center pillar garnish. Using the screwdriver, remove six clips and the garnish.

  25. Remove the front and rear door opening trims. Pull the trim with your hand and remove it.

  27. Remove the sun shade trim.

To install:

  1. Install the sun shade trim.
    1. While raising the drive rail, push the trim inward to install it.
    2.

  3. Install the front and rear door opening trims.
    NOTE
    Before installing the rear opening trim, confirm that the clips at the panel edge are installed firmly. Place the trim on the lip of the panel and push it in by hand to install it.

  4.  
  5. Install the center pillar garnish. Place the garnish on the center pillar and install it by tapping it in.
    NOTE
    Align the top of the clips with the holes of panel, then install the garnish.

  6.  
  7. Install the front scuff plate. Place the plate on the body and install it by tapping.
  8.  
  9. Install the package tray trim.
    1. Align the six retainers with the holes of the panel, then push the trim backward.
    2.  
    3. Install two clips to the trim.
    4.  
    5. Connect the connector to the speaker and the high mount stop light.
    6.  
    7. Place the speaker grille on the trim and install it by tapping.
    8.

  11. Install the room partition trim.
    NOTE
    If replacing the trim, peel off the backing paper on the trim. Install the trim as shown.

  13. Install the rear scuff plate.
    1. Install the lower side of the plate by tapping.
    2.  
    3. Align the plate with the clips on the body edge, then tap the plate with hand.
    4.  
    5. Install two clips and the plate.
    6.

  15. Install the roof side inner garnish.
    1. Pass the rear seat belt anchor plate, the tongue plate and the bezel through the garnish, then torque the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Connect the connector to the garnish.
    4.  
    5. Install the garnish by tapping.
    6.  
    7. Connect the connector and install the roomlight.
    8.

  17. Install the rear seat back as outlined in this section. Tighten the bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).

  19. Install the rear seat inner belt as outlined in this section. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).

  21. Install the rear seat cushion as outlined in this section.

  23. Install the front roof headlining.
    1. Connect the connectors to the headlining.

    3. Install the headlining by tapping.

    5. Install four screws.

    9. Push the center visor onto the mirror.
    10.  
    11. Install two screws and two holders.
    12.  
    13. Connect the connector to the switch.

    15. Install two clips and the map light.

    19. Install the map light lens.

  25. Install the front pillar garnish.
    1. Insert the front side of the garnish to the pillar to install the retainer.

    3. Install the garnish by tapping.

    5. Install two screws and the assist grip.

    7. Install the front seat belt shoulder anchor bolt. Tighten bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
      NOTE
      After installing the anchor bolt, check that the anchor turns smoothly.
