Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1993

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Hold the sliding pin on the lower mounting bolt and remove the bolt. Swivel the caliper upward and out of the way. Support the caliper. Do not disconnect the brake line.
  6.  
  7. Remove the two anti-squeal springs, the brake pads, the four anti-squeal shims, the wear indicators and the four pad support plates.
  8.  

To install:

  1. Install the pad support plates and the pad wear indicator plate on the inside pad.
  2.  
  3. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the anti-squeal shims. Install the shims to the pads. Do not allow any grease to contact the friction surface of the pad.
  4.  
  5. Install both pads with the wear indicator plates facing downward.
  6.  
  7. Install the anti-squeal springs. Press in the caliper pistons with a C-clamp and the old inner brake pad. Install the caliper over the pads.
  8.  
  9. Hold the sliding pin and tighten the mounting bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  12.  
  13. Lower the vehicle and check the brake fluid level in the reservoir.
    NOTE
    Be sure to pump the brakes several times to attain a firm brake pedal prior to moving the vehicle.

  15. Road test the vehicle for proper operation.
  16.  

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1994

  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Inspect pad lining thickness.
    1. Check the pad thickness through the caliper inspection hole and replace the pads if it is not within the specification. Minimum thickness: 0.039 inch (1.0 mm).
    2.

  5. Lift up caliper.
    1. Hold the sliding pin on the bottom and loosen the installation bolt.
    2.  
    3. Remove the installation bolt.
    4.  
    5. Lift up and suspend the brake caliper.
      NOTE
      Do not disconnect the flexible hose from the brake caliper.

  7. Remove 2 anti-squeal springs.
  8.  
  9. Remove pads.
    1. Remove the 2 pads.
    2.  
    3. Remove the clip, and disconnect the pad wear indicator from the inside pad.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 anti-squeal shims from each pad.
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Remove 4 pad support plates.
  12.  
  13. Check pad wear indicator.
  14.  
  15. Check disc thickness and runout.

To install:

  1. Install pad support plates on bottom side.
  2.  
  3. Install pad support plates on upper side.
    1. Using cleaner, wipe off dust, water, oil, etc. from the pad support plate contact area of the torque plate.
    2.  
    3. Remove the pad support cover sheet from new pad support plates.
    4.  
    5. Install the pad support plates.
    6.

  5. Install new pads.
    1. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims.
    2.  
    3. Install the 2 anti-squeal shims on each pad.
    4.  
    5. Connect the pad wear indicator to the inside pad, and install a new clip.
    6.  
    7. Install the inside pad with the pad wear indicator facing downward.
    8.  
    9. Install the outside pad as shown in the illustration.
      NOTE
      There should be no oil or grease adhering to the friction surfaces of the pads or disc.

    10.  
    11. Install the 2 anti-squeal springs.
    12.

  7. Install caliper.
    1. Draw out a small amount of brake fluid from the reservoir.
    2.  
    3. Place a wooden plate on the pistons, and press in the pistons with a hammer handle or similar implement.
      NOTE
      If the pistons the difficult to push in, loosen the bleeder plug and push in the pistons while letting some brake fluid escape.

    4.  
    5. Install the caliper.
    6.  
    7. Hold the sliding pin and torque the installation bolt. Tighten bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
    8.

  9. Install front wheel.
  10.  
  11. Ensure that fluid level is at max line.
  12.  

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1995-1996

  1. Remove front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Inspect pad lining thickness.
    1. Check the pad thickness and replace pads if they are not within the specification. Minimum thickness: 0.118 inch (3.0 mm).
    2.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the following parts:
    1. Clip and 2 pins
    2.  
    3. Anti-rattle spring
      NOTE
      The anti-rattle springs, spacers and clips can be used again provided that they have sufficient rebound, no deformation, cracks or wear, and have had all rust, dirt and foreign particles cleaned off.

  7. Remove pads.
    1. Remove the 2 pads.
    2.  
    3. Right wheel, remove the clip and bleeder cap, disconnect the pad wear indicator from the inner pad.
    4.  
    5. Remove the spacer and 2 anti-squeal shims from each pad.
    6.  

  8.  
  9. Right wheel, check pad wear indicator.
  10.  
  11. Check disc thickness and runout.

To install:

  1. Install new pads.
    NOTE
    When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced together with the pads.

    1. Draw out a small amount of brake fluid from the reservoir.
    2.  
    3. Press in the pistons with a monkey wrench handle or equivalent.
      NOTE
      Tape the monkey wrench handle before use.


      NOTE
      If the piston is difficult to push in, loosen the bleeder plug and push in the piston while letting some brake fluid escape.

    4.  
    5. Apply disc brake grease to both sides of the inner anti-squeal shims (See page BR-25).
    6.  
    7. Install the 2 anti-squeal shims and spacer on each pad.
      NOTE
      Make sure the shims and spacers are facing the front (rotation direction).

    8.  
    9. Right wheel, connect the pad wear indicator to the inner pads, and install a new clip.
      NOTE
      Install the clip lock securely in the grooves of the pad.

    10.  
    11. Install the 2 pads with the spacer facing downward.
    12.

  3. Install anti-rattle spring and 2 pins.
  4.  
  5. Right wheel, install clip.
    1. Install the pad wear indicator wire harness to the clip, then install the clip and bleeder cap to the caliper.
      NOTE
      Make sure the wire harness does not interfere with the caliper, etc.

  7. Install front wheel.
  8.  

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1997-1999

  1. Remove front wheel.
  2.  
  3. Inspect pad lining thickness.

To install:

    NOTE

  5. Right wheel, install clip.
    1. Install the pad wear indicator wire harness to the clip, then install the clip and bleeder cap to the caliper.
      NOTE
      Make sure the wire harness does not interfere with the caliper, etc.

  7. Install front wheel.
