Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1995-1997

  1. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch (located in the trunk) to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the ABS speed sensor and wire harness from the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the brake caliper support bracket by removing the two bolts. Leave the brake line connected. Support the caliper aside using a piece of wire.
  10.  
  11. Remove the clip and nut from the tie rod end.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering arm with the proper tool.
  14.  
  15. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the lower ball joint.
  16.  
  17. Using SST 09628-62011 or equivalent, disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Remove the shock absorber or if equipped with air suspension, remove the pneumatic cylinder.
  20.  
  21. Remove the lower shock bracket by removing the bolt and the through-bolt.

  23. Remove the nuts and disconnect the lower strut bar from the lower control arm.
  24.  
  25. Remove the two nuts and remove the suspension member brace.
  26.  
  27. Place matchmarks on the camber adjusting cam.
  28.  
  29. Remove the nut, the adjusting cam and the lower control arm.
    NOTE
    To help remove the adjusting cam, fully pull the steering wheel toward the lower arm being removed.

To install:

  1. Insert the camber adjusting cam from the front side of the vehicle and install the lower control arm. Temporarily tighten the cam nut.
  2.  
  3. Install the suspension member brace to the vehicle and install the two nuts. Torque the nuts to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the strut bar to the lower arm and tighten the nuts to 121 ft. lbs. (164 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the lower shock bracket. Torque the through-bolt to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm) and the top bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the shock absorber or if equipped with air suspension, install pneumatic cylinder.
  10.  
  11. Install the steering knuckle with the ball joint.
  12.  
  13. Connect the lower ball joint to the lower control arm and torque the nut to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm). Install a new cotter pin to the ball joint.
  14.  
  15. Connect the tie rod to the steering arm and tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Install a new clip.
  16.  
  17. Install the brake caliper support bracket and torque the two bolts to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the ABS speed sensor and wire harness to the steering knuckle.
  20.  
  21. Replace the tire and wheel assembly.
  22.  
  23. Lower the vehicle.
  24.  
  25. Turn the height control switch ON.
  26.  
  27. Bounce the vehicle several times to stabilize the suspension.
  28.  
  29. Turn OFF the height control switch.
  30.  
  31. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  32.  
  33. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  34.  
  35. Align the matchmarks on the adjusting cam and tighten the nut to 185 ft. lbs. (250 Nm).
  36.  
  37. Replace the tire and wheel assembly.
  38.  
  39. Lower the vehicle.
  40.  
  41. Turn the height control switch ON.
  42.  
  43. Check the front end alignment.
  44.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch (located in the trunk) to the OFF position.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and wiring harness from the steering knuckle.
     
    Brake caliper support bracket by removing the 2 bolts. Leave the brake line connected. Support the caliper aside by using a piece of wire.

  7. Loosen the 2 lower ball joint mounting bolts.
    NOTE
    Do not remove the bolts.

  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Clip and nut from the tie rod end
     
    Tie rod end from the steering arm with the proper tool.
     
    Lower ball joint mounting bolts from the steering knuckle.
     
    Cotter pin and nut from the lower ball joint.
     
    Lower ball joint from the lower control arm

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Ball joint to the lower control arm. Tighten the nut to 112 ft. lbs. (152 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    Mounting bolts, temporarily, holding the ball joint to the steering knuckle
     
    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm) and install a new cotter pin.
     
    Lower ball joint bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
     
    Brake caliper support bracket and tighten the 2 bolts to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor and wiring harness to the steering knuckle.
     
    Wheel

  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Turn the height control switch ON .
  6.
