Stabilizer Bar (Sway Bar) & Links

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1993-1994

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering knuckle with the axle hub.
  4.  
  5. Remove the strut assembly or the pneumatic cylinder.
  6.  
  7. Remove the strut assembly lower bracket.
  8.  
  9. Place matchmarks on the screw part and nut of the strut bar.
  10.  
  11. Remove the nut and washer from the front side of the strut bar.
  12.  
  13. Remove the 2 nuts and remove the strut bar from the lower arm.
  14.  
  15. Remove the 3 nuts and remove the strut bar cushion and strut bar.
  16.  
  17. Remove the right and left stabilizer bar bushings.
  18.  
  19. Remove the strut bar brackets with the stabilizer bar.
  20.  
  21. Remove the stabilizer bar and inspect the stabilizer bar link as follows.
    1. Flip the ball joint stud back and forth 5 times.
    2.  
    3. Using a torque gauge, turn the stud continuously 1 turn per 2-4 seconds and take the torque reading on the 5th turn.
    4.  
    5. Turning torque should be 0.4-13 inch lbs. (0.05-1.0 Nm).

To install:

  1. Install the strut bar bushings and brackets with the stabilizer bar to lower arm. Torque the bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (73 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the strut assembly lower bracket. Torque the nuts to 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the strut assembly or the pneumatic cylinder. Torque the nuts to 121 ft. lbs. (164 Nm).

  7. Install the strut lower bracket and torque the bolts as follows:

    Bolts A - 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm)
     
    Bolts B - 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm)

  9. Install the stabilizer bar links and torque the nuts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
    NOTE
    The left and right stabilizer bars are different.

  10.  
  11. Install the stabilizer bar bushings and torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the struts.
  14.  
  15. Install the steering knuckle and hub.
  16.  

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1995-1997

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  2.  
  3. Remove the steering knuckle with the axle hub.
  4.  
  5. Remove the strut assembly or if equipped with air suspension, remove the pneumatic cylinder.
  6.  
  7. Remove the right and left sway bar links by removing the nut from the strut lower bracket and the nut from the sway bar.
  8.  
  9. Remove the strut assembly lower bracket from the lower control arm.
  10.  
  11. Remove the brake strut bar as follows:
    1. Place matchmarks on the caster adjust cam and bracket.
    2.  
    3. Remove the nut, caster adjust cam and disconnect the strut bar.
    4.  
    5. Remove the two nuts and remove the strut bar from the lower control arm.
    6.

  13. Remove the right and left sway bar brackets and bushings by removing the bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the four brake strut bar bracket bolts and then pull out the strut bar bracket from the sway bar.

  17. Pull out the sway bar from the other brake strut bar bracket.
  18.  
  19. Remove the sway bar from the vehicle.
  20.  
  21. Inspect the sway bar link as follows.
    1. Flip the ball joint stud back and forth 5 times.
    2.  
    3. Using a torque gauge, turn the stud continuously 1 turn per 2-4 seconds and take the torque reading on the 5th turn.
    4.  
    5. Turning torque should be 0.4-13 inch lbs. (0.05-1.0 Nm).

To install:

  1. Install the sway bar to the vehicle and the brake strut bar bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the other brake strut bar bracket to the sway bar.
  4.  
  5. Install the four strut bar bracket bolts and torque the bolts to 53 ft. lbs. (72 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the sway bar bushings and brackets to the sway bar. Torque the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the strut bar and two bolts to the lower control arm. Torque the bolts to 121 ft. lbs. (164 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install bracket strut to the brake strut bracket and install the caster adjust cam and nut. Line up the matchmarks for the caster adjust cam and torque the nut to 121 ft. lbs. (164 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install the strut assembly lower bracket to the lower control arm. Torque the through-bolt to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm) and the inside bolt to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the sway bar links and torque the nuts to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).
    NOTE
    The left and right sway links are different.

  16.  
  17. Install the strut assembly or if equipped with air suspension, install the pneumatic cylinder.
  18.  
  19. Install the steering knuckle and hub.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  22.  
  23. Check the vehicle's front end alignment.
