Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1990-1999

Check the backlash in bearing shaft direction and the axle hub deviation. Maximum for backlash should be 0.0020 in. (0.05mm) and for axle hub deviation 0.020 in. (0.05mm).

NOTE
The front and rear wheel bearings are non-adjustable. If the wheel bearing is out of specifications, replace the wheel bearing.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1995-1997

  1. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch in the trunk area to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4.  
  5. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect the brake caliper bracket from the steering knuckle, leaving the brake line connected. Support the caliper with a piece of wire.
  8.  
  9. Remove the brake rotor.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ABS speed sensor from the steering knuckle.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering knuckle from the lower ball joint by removing the two bolts.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering knuckle from the upper ball joint.
  16.  
  17. Remove the steering knuckle with the axle hub from the vehicle.
  18.  
  19. Using a prytool, remove the grease cap from the hub.

  21. Remove the nut and the speed sensor rotor.
  22.  
  23. Remove the four bolts and shift the brake dust cover towards the hub side.
  24.  
  25. Using SST 09950-00020 or equivalent, press out the axle hub from the steering knuckle.
  26.  
  27. Using SST 09950-00020 or equivalent, press out the outside inner race from the axle.
  28.  
  29. Using SST 09308-00010 or equivalent, remove the oil seal from the steering knuckle.
  30.  
  31. Remove the snapring and using SST 09950-60010 or equivalent, remove the bearing from the steering knuckle.
  32.  

To install:

  1. Using the SST 09608-35014 or equivalent, install the bearing to the steering knuckle. Install the snapring.
  2.  
  3. Install the inner race (outside) and press in a new oil seal until it is flush with the end surface of the steering knuckle.
  4.  
  5. Install the brake dust cover to the steering knuckle and torque the bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8.4 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Using SST 09608-32010 and 09608-35014 or equivalent, press the axle hub to the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Install the ABS speed sensor.
  10.  
  11. Install and torque a new nut to the axle shaft. Torque the nut to 147 ft. lbs. (199 Nm). Stake the nut and install the grease cap.
  12.  
  13. Install the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint and torque the bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the steering knuckle to the upper ball joint and tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install brake rotor.
  18.  
  19. Install the brake caliper and torque the two bolts to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the speed sensor to the steering knuckle.
  22.  
  23. Install the front tire and wheel assembly.
  24.  
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26.  
  27. If equipped with air suspension, turn the height control switch to the ON position.
  28.  

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1990-1994

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch in the trunk area to the OFF position.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Front tire and wheel assembly
     
    Brake caliper bracket from the steering knuckle, leaving the brake line connected. Support the caliper with a piece of wire.
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor from the steering knuckle
     
    Steering knuckle from the lower ball joint by removing the 2 bolts.
     
    Steering knuckle from the upper ball joint
     
    Steering knuckle with the axle hub from the vehicle
     
    Grease cap from the hub
     
    Nut and the speed sensor rotor
     
    4 bolts and shift the brake dust cover towards the hub side.
     
    Axle hub from the steering knuckle
     
    Outside inner race from the axle
     
    Oil seal from the steering knuckle
     
    Snapring and bearing from the steering knuckle.
     

  6.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Bearing in the steering knuckle
     
    Snapring
     
    Inner race (outside)
     
    New oil seal until it is flush with the end surface of the steering knuckle
     
    Brake dust cover to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolts to 74 inch lbs. (8.4 Nm).
     
    Axle hub to the steering knuckle
     
    ABS speed sensor
     
    New nut on the axle shaft. Tighten the nut to 147 ft. lbs. (199 Nm). Stake the nut and install the grease cap.
     
    Steering knuckle to the lower ball joint and tighten the bolts to 83 ft. lbs. (113 Nm).
     
    Steering knuckle to the upper ball joint and tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    Brake rotor
     
    Brake caliper and tighten the 2 bolts to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).
     
    Speed sensor to the steering knuckle
     
    Front tire and wheel assembly
     

  2.  
  3. If equipped with air suspension, turn the height control switch to the ON position.
