Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1993-1994

The combination switch incorporates the headlight switch, turn signal switch, dimmer switch and the windshield wiper switch.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  2.  
  3. Disable the SRS system.
  4.  
  5. Position the front wheels in a straight-ahead position.
  6.  
  7. Remove the undercover, lower pad, key cylinder pad. The No. 3 finish panel mounting bracket. The No. 2 heater to register duct.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel center pad.
  10.  
  11. Remove the steering wheel assembly.
  12.  
  13. Remove the steering column cover. Remove the 4 combination switch retaining screws. Disconnect the connectors and remove the combination switch assembly from the steering column.
    NOTE
    Since the air bag connector has a 2 stage lock, remove the 1st stage lock and then disconnect the connector.

  15. Loosen the mounting screws and remove the dimmer switch and the turn signal switch from the switch body.
  16.  
  17. Separate the bracket from the wiper switch body. Remove the wiper switch from the switch body.
  18.  

To install:

  1. Install the wiper switch to the switch body and connect the mounting bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the dimmer and turn signal switch to the switch body and tighten the mounting screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the combination switch assembly to the steering column and tighten the mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical connectors. Push in the terminals until they are securely locked in the connector lug.
    NOTE
    The spiral cable matchmarks must be aligned for correct installation with the front wheels in the straight head position.

  8.  
  9. Replace both steering column covers. Install the steering wheel, using the proper tool.
  10.  
  11. Connect the air bag connector and replace the 1st stage lock.
  12.  
  13. Replace the cluster finish panel. Install the steering wheel center pad and connect the wire connector.
  14.  
  15. Replace the key cylinder trim pad assembly and heater duct register.
  16.  
  17. Replace the key cylinder trim pad assembly and heater duct register.
  18.  
  19. Install the lower instrument trim panel and cover assembly.
  20.  
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22.

The combination switch incorporates the headlight switch, turn signal switch, dimmer switch and the windshield wiper switch.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds before performing any other work.
  2.  
  3. Disable the SRS system.
  4.  
  5. Position the front wheels in a straight-ahead position.
    CAUTION
    The air bag system must be disarmed before removing the steering wheel. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment, property damage or personal injury.

  7. Remove the steering wheel center pad.
  8.  
  9. Remove the steering wheel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Remove the No. 1 instrument panel undercover as follows:
    1. Disconnect the two connectors and DLC2.
    2.  
    3. Remove the two screws with the DLC3.
    4.  
    5. Remove the two cover set screws.
    6.

  13. Remove the instrument panel end pad and instrument panel finish plate.
  14.  
  15. Remove the No. 1 instrument panel safety pad as follows:
    1. Remove the two screws and disconnect the engine hood release lever from the panel.
    2.  
    3. Remove the four panel set bolts.
    4.

  17. Remove the No. 2 heater to register duct.
  18.  
  19. Remove the steering column cover.
  20.  
  21. Remove the combination switch as follows:
    1. Disconnect the two connectors.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the air bag connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the three screws.
    6.

  23. Loosen the mounting screws and remove the turn signal switch from the switch body.
  24.  
  25. Separate the bracket from the wiper switch body. Remove the wiper switch from the switch body.
  26.  

To install:

  1. Install the wiper switch to the switch body and connect the mounting bracket.
  2.  
  3. Install the turn signal switch to the switch body and tighten the mounting screws.
  4.  
  5. Install the combination switch assembly to the steering column and tighten the mounting screws.
  6.  
  7. Connect the electrical connectors. Push in the terminals until they are securely locked in the connector lug.
  8.  
  9. Replace both steering column covers.
  10.  
  11. Install the No. 2 heater to register duct.
  12.  
  13. Install the No. 1 instrument panel safety pad as follows:
    1. Tighten the four panel set bolts.
    2.  
    3. Connect the engine hood release lever and tighten the two screws to the panel.
    4.

  15. Install the instrument panel end pad and finish plate.
  16.  
  17. Install the No. 1 instrument panel undercover.
  18.  
  19. Check that the front wheels are facing straight-ahead. Center the spiral cable. When centering the spiral cable be sure to use the following procedure:
    1. Check that the front wheels are pointing straight-ahead.
    2.  
    3. Turn the spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable. The spiral cable will rotate approximately 3 turns to either the left or right of the center.
    4.  
    5. Rotate the spiral cable clockwise approximately 3 turns to align the green mark.
      NOTE
      The spiral cable matchmarks must be aligned for correct installation with the front wheels in the straight head position.

  21. Install the steering wheel and pad, using the proper tool.
  22.  
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24.  
  25. Enable the air bag system.
  26.
