Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1992-1994

  1. Tilt down and pull out steering wheel.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal.
    CAUTION
    Work must be started after, 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the -LOCK- position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.

  4.  
  5. Remove the right and left front pillar garnish.
  6.  
  7. Remove the steering wheel.
    NOTE
    The steering wheel pad should be placed with the pad top surface facing up.

  8.  
  9. Remove the steering column cover..
    1. Remove three screws and cover.
    2.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the upper console panel.
    1. Pry out the rear side of the panel.
    2.  
    3. Pull the panel backwards to remove it.
    4.  

  12.  
  13. Remove the front ash receptacle.
    NOTE
    Perform this operation only with the ash receptacle fully closed.

    1. Pull the front ash receptacle.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connector.
    4.  

  14.  
  15. Remove the lower console cover.
    1. Using the screwdriver, pry out the front side of the cover.
    2.  
    3. Slide the cover forward to remove it.
    4.  

  16.  
  17. Remove the lower console box.
    1. Remove rear console box garnish.
    2.  
    3. Remove four screws.
    4.  
    5. Using the screwdriver, pry out the box.
    6.  

  18.  
  19. Remove the cup holder.
    1. Remove four screws and the cup holder.
    2.  

  20.  
  21. Remove the console box.
    1. Using the screwdriver, pry out the rear end panel.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove four screws and the box.
    6.  

  22.  
  23. Remove the No. 1 under cover.
  24.  
  25. Remove three screws.
    1. Using the screwdriver, remove the cover.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the valve from the cover.
    4.  

  26.  
  27. Remove the engine hood release lever.
    1. Remove two screws and the engine hood release lever.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the release cable from the lever.
    4.  

  28.  
  29. Remove the KER cylinder pad.
    1. Using the screwdriver, remove the pad.
    2.  

  30.  
  31. Remove the LH lower pad.
    1. Remove six bolts and the pad.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connectors and hose from the pad.
    4.

  33. Remove the parking brake lever.
    1. Remove three bolts and the lever.
    2.  

  34.  
  35. Remove the outer mirror switch assembly.
    1. Remove two screws.
    2.  
    3. Using the screwdriver, pry out the assembly.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connectors.
    6.  

  36.  
  37. Remove the cluster finish panel.
    1. Remove three screws.
    2.  
    3. Using the screwdriver, pry out the assembly.
    4.  
    5. Using the screwdriver, pry out the upper side of the panel and remove it. Do not scratch the panel with the screwdriver.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the connectors from the panel.
    8.

  39. Remove the combination meter.
    1. Remove four screws and the meter.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connectors from the meter.
    4.

  41. Remove the No. 2 register.
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the register. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    2.

  43. Remove the radio with A/C control assembly.
    1. Remove four screws and radio with the A/C control assembly.
    2.  

  44.  
  45. Remove the No. 2 under cover.
    1. Using a clip remover, remove the clips.
    2.  
    3. Using the screwdriver, remove the cover.
    4.  

  46.  
  47. Disconnect the front passenger air bag connector.
    1. Using the screwdriver, pry out the glove compartment finish plate.
    2.  
    3. Remove the connector from the glove compartment finish plate.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connector.
      NOTE
      When disconnecting the front passenger airbag connector, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

  49. Remove the glove compartment.
    1. Using the screwdriver, remove NO.2 glove compartment panel.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect LH side check arm from the door.
    4.  
    5. Using a screwdriver, push in the top of clip and remove five clips.
    6.  
    7. Insert a plastic plate between the upper of the compartment to remove it.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the connector from the glove compartment.
    10.  
    11. Remove the nut and two bolts.
    12.  
    13. Remove the lock striker plate from the safety pad.
    14.

  51. Remove the front passenger air bag assembly.
    1. Remove the three bolts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front passenger airbag assembly by sliding it out horizontally.
      CAUTION
      Store the front passenger airbag assembly with the airbag door facing up.


      CAUTION
      Never disassemble the front passenger airbag assembly.

  53. Remove the RH lower pad.
    1. Remove five bolts.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, remove the lower pad.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connectors from the lower pad.
    6.

  55. Remove the glove compartment door.
    1. Remove the bolt, four screws and the door.
    2.  

  56.  
  57. Remove ABS ECU
    1. Remove a bolt, a nut and ABS ECU.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connectors.
    4.  

  58.  
  59. Remove the No .2 heater to register duct.
    1. Remove a bolt and No.3 finish panel mounting bracket.
    2.  
    3. Remove the duct.
    4.  

  60.  
  61. Remove the No. 4 and No .5 heater to register duct.
    1. Remove a screw and pull out the ducts.
    2.  

  62.  
  63. Remove the safety pad.
  64.  

Driver-s side

  1. Loosen the lock bolt and disconnect the junction block.
  2.  
  3. Using a clip remover, disconnect three clips at the floor carpet.
  4.  
  5. Remove four screws and combination switch.
  6.  

Passenger-s side

  1. Disconnect the connectors.
  2.  
  3. Remove the bolt and bond cable.
  4.  
  5. Using a clip remover, disconnect three clips at the floor carpet.
  6.  
  7. Remove nine bolts and one nut from the safety pad.
  8.  

  1. Remove the solar sensor.
    1. Disconnect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Remove the solar sensor.
    4.  

  2.  
  3. Remove the No. 1 and No. 2 side defroster nozzle.
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the nozzles. Tape the screwdriver, tip before use.
    2.  

  4.  
  5. Remove the front defroster nozzle with No. 1 and No. 2 side defroster nozzle duct.
    1. Remove eight screws and pull the nozzle with the ducts.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the ducts from the nozzle.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Remove the driver-s side of wire harness.
    1. Remove four screws from the wire harness.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver and a clip remover, remove the clips and the wire harness.
    4.  

  8.  
  9. Remove the passenger-s side of wire harness.
    1. Using the screwdriver, remove the clip and the passenger side of wire harness.
    2.  

  10.  
  11. Remove the No. 2 instrument panel to cowl brace No. 4 finish panel mounting bracket and No. 1 instrument panel to cowl brace.
    1. Remove two screws and No.2 instrument panel to cowl brace.
    2.  
    3. Remove two screws and No.4 finish panel mounting bracket.
    4.  
    5. Remove two screws and No.1 instrument panel to cowl brace.
    6.

  13. Remove the No. 1 and No. 3 instrument panel register.
    1. Remove four screws and No.1 register.
    2.  
    3. Pull the register to inner side and remove it.
    4.  
    5. Remove the No.3 register in the same manner.
    6.

  15. Remove the No. 1 and No. 3 instrument panel register.
    1. Using the screwdriver, remove the garnishes.
    2.  

  16.  
  17. Remove the No. 1 instrument panel brace.
    1. Remove a bolt and the bond cable.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the clip of wire harness.
    4.  
    5. Remove two bolts, one nut and the brace.
    6.  

  18.  
  19. Remove the No. 2 instrument panel brace.
    1. Remove a bolt and the junction block.
    2.  
    3. Remove two bolts, nut and the brace.
    4.  

  20.  
  21. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement.
    1. Remove seven bolts and four nuts to remove the reinforcement. Before removing the steering column, disconnect the spring from the brake pedal.

To install:

  1. Install the instrument panel reinforcement.
    1. Before installing the steering column, connect the spring to the brake pedal. Install seven bolts and four nuts to install the reinforcement.
    2.

  3. Install the No. 2 instrument panel brace.
    1. Install two bolts, nut and the brace.
    2.  
    3. Install a bolt and the junction block.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Install the No. 1 instrument panel brace.
    1. Install two bolts, one nut and the brace.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, connect the clip of wire harness.
    4.  
    5. Install a bolt and the bond cable.
    6.  

  6.  
  7. Install the No. 1 and No. 3 instrument panel register.
    1. Using the screwdriver, install the garnishes.
    2.  

  8.  
  9. Install the No. 1 and No. 3 instrument panel register.
    1. Install the No.3 register in the same manner.
    2.  
    3. Push the register to inner side and install it.
    4.  
    5. Install four screws and No.1 register.
    6.  

  10.  
  11. Install the No. 2 instrument panel to cowl brace No. 4 finish panel mounting bracket and No. 1 instrument panel to cowl brace.
    1. Install two screws and No.1 instrument panel to cowl brace.
    2.  
    3. Install two screws and No.4 finish panel mounting bracket.
    4.  
    5. Install two screws and No.2 instrument panel to cowl brace.
    6.

  13. Install the passenger-s side of wire harness.
    1. Using the screwdriver, install the clip and the passenger side of wire harness.
    2.  

  14.  
  15. Install the driver-s side of wire harness.
    1. Using a screwdriver and a clip installer, install the clips and the wire harness.
    2.  
    3. Install four screws from the wire harness.
    4.  

  16.  
  17. Install the front defroster nozzle with No. 1 and No. 2 side defroster nozzle duct.
    1. Connect the ducts from the nozzle.
    2.  
    3. Install eight screws and pull the nozzle with the ducts.
    4.  

  18.  
  19. Install the No. 1 and No. 2 side defroster nozzle.
    1. Using a screwdriver, install the nozzles. Tape the screwdriver, tip before use.
    2.  

  20.  
  21. Install the solar sensor.
    1. Install the solar sensor.
    2.  
    3. Connect the connector.
    4.  

  22.  
  23. Install the safety pad.
  24.  

Driver-s side

  1. Install four screws and combination switch.
  2.  
  3. Using a clip installer, connect three clips at the floor carpet.
  4.  
  5. Connect the junction block and tighten the lock bolt.
  6.  

Passenger-s side

  1. Install nine bolts and one nut from the safety pad.
  2.  
  3. Using a clip installer, connect three clips at the floor carpet.
  4.  
  5. Install the bolt and bond cable.
  6.  
  7. Connect the connectors..
  8.  

  1. Install the No. 4 and No .5 heater to register duct.
    1. Push in the ducts and install a screw.
    2.  

  2.  
  3. Install the No .2 heater to register duct.
    1. Install the duct.
    2.  
    3. Install a bolt and NO.3 finish panel mounting bracket.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Install ABS ECU.
    1. Connect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Install a bolt, a nut and ABS ECU.
    4.  

  6.  
  7. Install the glove compartment door.
    1. Install the door, four screws and the bolt.
    2.  

  8.  
  9. Install the RH lower pad.
    1. Connect the connectors from the lower pad.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, install the lower pad.
    4.  
    5. Install five bolts.
      CAUTION
      Store the front passenger airbag assembly with the airbag door facing up.


      CAUTION
      Never disassemble the front passenger airbag assembly.

  11. Install the front passenger air bag assembly.
    1. Install the front passenger airbag assembly by sliding it out horizontally.
    2.  
    3. Install the three bolts.
    4.

  13. Install the glove compartment.
    1. Install the lock striker plate from the safety pad.
    2.  
    3. Install the nut and two bolts.
    4.  
    5. Connect the connector from the glove compartment.
    6.  
    7. Insert a plastic plate between the upper of the compartment to install it.
    8.  
    9. Using a screwdriver, push in the top of clip and install five clips.
    10.  
    11. Connect LH side check arm from the door.
    12.  
    13. Using the screwdriver, install No. 2 glove compartment panel.
      NOTE
      When connecting the front passenger airbag connector, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

  15. Connect the front passenger air bag connector.
    1. Connect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Install the connector to the glove compartment finish plate.
    4.  
    5. Push in the glove compartment finish plate.
    6.

  17. Install the No. 2 under cover.
    1. Install the cover.
    2.  
    3. Using a clip installer, install the clips.
    4.  

  18.  
  19. Install the radio with A/C control assembly.
    1. Install four screws and radio with the A/C control assembly.
    2.  

  20.  
  21. Install the No. 2 register.
    1. Install the register. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    2.  

  22.  
  23. Install the combination meter.
    1. Connect the connectors from the meter.
    2.  
    3. Install four screws and the meter.
    4.

  25. Install the cluster finish panel.
    1. Connect the connectors to the panel.
    2.  
    3. Push in the upper side of the panel and install it.
    4.  
    5. Push in the assembly.
    6.  
    7. Install three screws.
    8.

  27. Install the outer mirror switch assembly.
    1. Connect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Push in the assembly.
    4.  
    5. Install two screws.

    13. Assist grip
    14.  
    15. Center pillar garnishes

  7. Remove the rear personal light.
    1. Remove the screw.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, remove the light. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connector.
    6.  

  8.  
  9. Remove the roof side inner garnish.
    NOTE
    Paying enough attention remove the clip on the roof side inner garnish shown in the illustration. Otherwise, the roof side inner garnish or the front pillar garnish might be broken.

  11. Remove the front pillar garnish.
    1. Remove the front seat outer belt shoulder anchor.
    2.  
    3. Remove the front pillar garnish.
    4.

  13. Remove the steering column cover.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering wheel as outlined in this section.

  17. Remove the following parts:
    1. Parking brake release lever
    2.  
    3. Hood lock release lever
    4.  
    5. No.1 under cover
    6.  
    7. Finish plate
    8.  
    9. End pad
    10.  
    11. No.1 safety pad
    12.  
    13. Coin box
    14.  
    15. No.2 heater to register duct
    16.  
    17. No.2 under cover

  19. Remove the instrument panel box assembly.
    1. Using a screwdriver, pry out the glove compartment door finish plate. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    2.  
    3. Remove the connector from the glove compartment door finish plate.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the airbag connector.
      NOTE
      When disconnecting the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    6.  
    7. Remove the 3 screws and 2 nuts.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the connector, remove the instrument panel box assembly.
    10.

  21. Remove the glove compartment.
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and glove compartment door.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 3 screws and glove compartment.
    4.

  23. Remove the steering column as outlined in this section.
  24.  
  25. Remove the upper cluster finish panel.
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the upper cluster finish panel.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connectors.
    4.

  27. Remove the combination meter.
    1. Remove the 2 screws.
    2.  
    3. Insert a screwdriver in the 2 clip holes, remove the combination meter. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    5. Disconnect the connectors.

  29. Remove the No. 2 register.
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the No.2 register. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connector.
    4.

  31. Remove the cluster finish panel.
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the cluster finish panel. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the connector.

  33. Remove the following parts:
    1. Radio with A/C control assembly

    3. Cup holder
    4.

  35. Remove the lower console box.
    1. Remove the lower console cover.

    3. Remove the rear console cover.

    5. Disconnect the connector.
    6.  
    7. Remove the 3 screws and lower console box.
    8.

  37. Remove the console box.
    1. Remove the 4 screws and consol box.
    2.

  39. Remove the instrument panel.
    1. Remove the 2 bolts from the front passenger airbag assembly.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 3 bolts and 2 nuts.
    4.  
    5. Disconnect the connectors.
    6.  
    7. Remove the instrument panel.
    8.  

  40.  
  41. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement.
    1. Remove the 4 nuts and 6 bolts.
    2.  
    3. Remove the instrument panel reinforcement.

  1. Install the instrument panel reinforcement.
    1. Install the instrument panel reinforcement.
    2.  
    3. Install the 4 nuts and 6 bolts.

  3. Install the instrument panel.
    1. Install the instrument panel.

    3. Connect the connectors.
    4.  
    5. Install the 3 bolts and 2 nuts.
    6.  
    7. Install the 2 bolts from the front passenger airbag assembly. Tighten bolts to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    8.

  5. Install the console box.
    1. Install the 4 screws and consol box.
    2.  

  6.  
  7. Install the lower console box.
    1. Install the 3 screws and lower console box.
    2.  
    3. Connect the connector.
    4.  
    5. Install the rear console cover.
    6.  
    7. Install the lower console cover.
    8.

  9. Install the following parts:
    1. Cup holder
    2.  
    3. Radio with A/C control assembly
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Install the cluster finish panel.
    1. Connect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, install the cluster finish panel. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    4.  

  12.  
  13. Install the No. 2 register.
    1. Connect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, remove the No.2 register. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    4.  

  14.  
  15. Install the combination meter.
    1. Connect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Insert a screwdriver in the 2 clip holes, install the combination meter. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
    4.  
    5. Install the 2 screws.
    6.

  17. Install the upper cluster finish panel.
    1. Connect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Using a screwdriver, install the upper cluster finish panel.
    4.  

  18.  
  19. Install the steering column as outlined in this section.
  20.  
  21. Install the glove compartment.
    1. Install the 3 screws and glove compartment.
    2.  
    3. Install the 2 bolts and glove compartment door.
    4.

  23. Install the instrument panel box assembly.
    1. Connect the connector, install the instrument panel box assembly.
    2.  
    3. Install the 3 screws and 2 nuts.
      NOTE
      When connecting the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    5. Connect the airbag connector.
    6.  
    7. Install the connector from the glove compartment door finish plate.
    8.  
    9. Push in the glove compartment door finish plate.

    3. Using a screwdriver, install the light. Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

    3. Assist grip.

    5. Package tray trim.

    7. Speaker grille.

    9. High-mounted stop light.

    13. Rear door scuff plates.
    14.  
    15. Front door scuff plates.
    16.  
    17. Rear seatback. Tighten bolts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
    18.  
    19. Rear seat belt lower side bolt. Tighten the bolt to 32 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
    20.  
    21. Rear seat cushion.

NOTE
If the wiring connector of the supplemental restraint system is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, diagnostic trouble codes will be recorded.

  1. Remove the steering wheel pad.
    1. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal.
    2.  
    3. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
    4.  
    5. Using a TORX® wrench, loosen the 4 screws. TORX® wrench: T30 (Part No.09042-00010 or locally manufactured tool)
    6.  
    7. Loosen the TORX® screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    8.  
    9. Pull the wheel pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
      NOTE
      When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.


      CAUTION
      When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.

    3. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the TORX® screws is caught on the screw case.

    5. Using a TORX® wrench, tighten the 4 screws. Tighten screws to 64 inch lbs. (7.4 Nm).
      NOTE
      Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.


      NOTE
      If the wheel pad has been dropped, of there are cracks, dents in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.


      NOTE
      When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfare with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

    1. Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and main shaft assembly.

    1. Install the steering wheel set nut. Tighten the nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

  29. Install the steering wheel pad.
    NOTE
    Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.


    NOTE
    Make sure the wheel pad is installed with the specified torque.


    NOTE
    If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects on the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.


    NOTE
    When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and that they are not pinched between other parts.

    1. Connect the connector.

    3. Connect the airbag connector.

    5. Install the steering wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the TORX® screws is caught on the screw case.

    7. Using a TORX® socket wrench, torque the 2 screws. Tighten screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).

    9. Install the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers.
