Removal & Installation

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1993-1994

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2.  
  3. Place the front wheels in a straight-ahead position, secure the steering wheel with a suitable device to prevent the wheel from turning.
  4.  
  5. Place matchmarks in the universal joint and control valve shaft. Disconnect the joint.
  6.  
  7. Disconnect and plug the hydraulic lines to rack assembly.
  8.  
  9. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect or raise the brake calipers and support them with a piece of wire.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle with the proper tool.
  14.  
  15. Remove the steering damper and rack boot protector.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the solenoid wiring.
  18.  
  19. Remove the mounting grommets and brackets. Remove the rack assembly.
  20.  

To install:

  1. Center the rack correctly.
  2.  
  3. Install the rack. Torque mounting bracket bolts to 56 ft. lbs. (76 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Connect the solenoid wiring.
  6.  
  7. Install the rack boot protector and steering damper. Torque the bolts to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Connect the tie rod ends.
  10.  
  11. Install the calipers.
  12.  
  13. Connect the fluid lines to the rack and pinion with new washers. Torque the union bolts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Align the universal joint to the control valve shaft and torque the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  16.  

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1995-1997

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the wheel(s).
  4.  
  5. Remove the engine undercover by removing the eight bolts and five screws.
  6.  
  7. Remove the cotter pin and nut holding each tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle with a tie rod end puller.
  10.  
  11. Place matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
  12.  
  13. Loosen the top bolt holding the sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft. Remove the bottom bolt holding the sliding yoke to the steering rack.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the pressure feed and return lines to the rack and pinion.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the power steering connector.
  18.  
  19. Remove the four mount bolts and nuts to the power steering rack.
  20.  
  21. Remove the two brackets and grommets.
  22.  
  23. Remove the power steering rack from the vehicle.
  24.  

To install:

  1. Install the power steering rack to the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Install the two brackets and grommets to the power steering rack.
  4.  
  5. Install the four bolts and torque the bolts to 56 ft. lbs. (76 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the power steering solenoid connector.
  8.  
  9. Connect the pressure feed and return tubes. Torque the union bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Align the matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
  12.  
  13. Torque the bolt holding the sliding yoke to the steering rack to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Torque the bolt holding the sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
  18.  
  19. Install the engine undercover.
  20.  
  21. Bleed the power steering system.
  22.  
  23. Install the wheel(s) and check the front end alignment.
  24.  

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1990-1992

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Wheel(s)
     
    Engine undercover by removing the 8 bolts and 5 screws.
     
    Cotter pin and nut holding each tie rod to the steering knuckle.
     
    Tie rod end from the steering knuckle with a tie rod end puller.

  5. Place matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
  6.  
  7. Loosen the top bolt holding the sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft. Remove the bottom bolt holding the sliding yoke to the steering rack.
  8.  
  9. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Pressure feed and return lines to the rack and pinion
     
    Power steering connector
     
    4 mount bolts and nuts to the power steering rack
     
    2 brackets and grommets
     
    Power steering rack from the vehicle
     

  10.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Power steering rack to the vehicle.
     
    2 brackets and grommets to the power steering rack.
     
    4 bolts and tighten the bolts to 56 ft. lbs. (76 Nm).
     
    Power steering solenoid connector
     
    Pressure feed and return tubes. Tighten the union bolt to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Align the matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
  4.  
  5. Tighten the bolt holding the sliding yoke to the steering rack to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Tighten the bolt holding the sliding yoke to the intermediate shaft to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install or connect the following:

    Tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm). Install a new cotter pin.
     
    Engine undercover
     
    Wheel(s)
     

  10.  
  11. Bleed the power steering system and check the front end alignment.
  12.
