Lower Control Arms

Removal & Installation



  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. If equipped with air suspension. move the height control ON/OFF switch (located in the luggage compartment) to the OFF position.

  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear wheel assembly.
  6.  
  7. Remove the strut rod:
    1. Remove the nut and bolt and disconnect the strut rod from the rear axle carrier.
    2.  
    3. Remove the nut, bolt and the strut rod from the body.
    4.

  9. If equipped with air suspension, place matchmarks on the height control link and bracket. Disconnect the height control sensor link from the No. 1 lower control arm.

  11. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body. Remove the nut and adjusting cam.
  12.  
  13. Remove the nut on the axle carrier side of the No. 1 lower control arm.
  14.  
  15. Using a tie rod removal tool, remove the No. 1 lower control arm.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the No. 2 lower control arm.
  18.  
  19. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body. Remove the nut and adjusting cam from the No. 2 lower control arm.
  20.  
  21. Remove the nut and bolt holding the No. 2 lower control arm to the axle carrier.
  22.  
  23. Inspect the No. 1 lower suspension arm ball joint as follows.
    1. Flip the ball joint stud back and forth 5 times.
    2.  
    3. Using a torque gauge, turn the stud continuously 1 turn per 2-4 seconds and take the torque reading on the 5th turn.
    4.  
    5. Turning torque should be 7-30 inch lbs. (0.8-3.4 Nm).

    7. If not within specifications, replace the No. 1 suspension arm.

To install:

  1. Install the No. 2 lower control arm to the body and axle carrier as follows:
    1. Install the bolt and nut connecting the No. 2 lower control arm to the axle carrier. Torque the bolt to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the nut and adjusting cam to hold the No. 2 lower control arm to the body. Align the adjusting cam and torque the nut to 57 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the stabilizer bar link to the No. 2 lower control arm and torque the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).

  3. Install the No. 1 lower control arm to the axle carrier and body. Install the nut to hold the No. 1 lower control arm to the axle carrier. Torque the nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).

  5. Install the nut and adjusting cam to hold the No. 1 lower control arm to the body. Align the matchmarks and torque the nut to 57 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Connect the height control sensor link to the No. 1 lower control arm with a new nut. Align the matchmarks on the height control sensor and torque the nut to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the strut rod to the axle carrier and body. Install the bolt and nut to hold the strut rod to the body. Torque to 57 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
  10.  
  11. With the strut connected to the axle carrier, install the bolt and nut to hold the strut rod to the axle carrier. Torque the bolt and nut to 136 ft. lbs. (184 Nm)

  13. Install the rear wheel assemblies, lower the vehicle and torque the rear wheel retaining nuts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).

  15. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery.
  16.  
  17. If equipped with air suspension, turn the height control switch back to the ON position. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to stabilize the suspension.
  18.  
  19. Check the rear wheel alignment.
