Removal & Installation



  1. Remove rear wheel.
  2.  
  3. Remove these parts
    NOTE
    Rear seat cushion and rear seatback


    NOTE
    Package tray trim.

  4.  
  5. Remove rear drive shaft
  6.  
  7. Disconnect stabilizer bar link
    1. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the stabilizer bar.
    2.  

  8.  
  9. Remove rear brake caliper
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and brake caliper.
    2.  
    3. Support the brake caliper securely.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Remove abs speed sensor
    1. Remove the bolt and ABS speed sensor.
      NOTE
      When removing them from right side, do not disconnect the pad wear indicator connector.

    2.

  13. HID type headlight: disconnect height control sensor link from no.1 lower suspension arm
    1. Place matchmarks on the link and bracket.
    2.  
    3. Remove the nut and disconnect the height control sensor link.
    4.  

  14.  
  15. Remove shock absorber and coil spring
    1. Loosen the bolt and remove the nut on lower side of the shock absorber.
      NOTE
      Do not remove the bolt.

    2.  
    3. Support the rear axle carrier with a jack.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 3 nuts and shock absorber cap.
    6.  
    7. Loosen the suspension support center nut.
      NOTE
      Do not remove the nut.

    8.  
    9. Remove the 3 nuts.
    10.  
    11. Lower the rear axle carrier and remove the bolt on lower side of shock absorber.
    12.  
    13. Remove the shock absorber and coil spring.

To install:

  1. Install rear wheel. Tighten wheel to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the following parts
    1. Rear seat cushion and rear seatback
    2.  
    3. Package tray trim.
    4.  

  4.  
  5. Install rear drive shaft
  6.  
  7. Connect stabilizer bar link
    1. Connect the stabilizer bar link to the stabilizer bar. Tighten bar to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
    2.  

  8.  
  9. Install rear brake caliper
    1. Install the 2 bolts and brake caliper. Tighten the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Support the brake caliper securely.
    4.  

  10.  
  11. Install abs speed sensor
    1. Install the bolt and ABS speed sensor. Tighten the bolt to 69 inch lbs. (7.8 Nm).
    2.  

  12.  
  13. HID type headlight: connect height control sensor link to no.1 lower suspension arm
    1. Match the matchmarks on the link and bracket.
    2.  
    3. Install the nut and disconnect the height control sensor link. Tighten the nut to 48 inch lbs. (5.0 Nm).
    4.  

  14.  
  15. Install shock absorber and coil spring
    1. Tighten the bolt and install the nut on lower side of the shock absorber. Tighten the bolt to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
      NOTE
      Do not remove the bolt.

    2.  
    3. Support the rear axle carrier with a jack.
    4.  
    5. Install the 3 nuts and shock absorber cap. Tighten the nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Tighten the suspension support center nut. Tighten the nut to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
      NOTE
      Do not remove the nut.

    8.  
    9. Install the 3 nuts. Tighten nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
    10.  
    11. Lower the rear axle carrier and install the bolt on lower side of shock absorber.
    12.  
    13. Install the shock absorber and coil spring.
    14.

ABS Speed Sensor Signal Check

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1990-1999

  1. Sensor signal check (test mode)
    NOTE
    If the ignition switch is turned from ON to ACC or LOCK during test mode, DTC will be erased.

    1. In case of not using LEXUS hand-held tester: Check the sensor signal.
      NOTE
      If the ABS warning light does not blink, inspect the ABS warning light circuit and Ts terminal circuit.


      NOTE
      The above mentioned condition comes into existence, the ABS warning light comes ON for 3 seconds.


      NOTE
      There is a case that the sensor check is not completed if the vehicle has its rear wheels spun or its steering wheel steered during this check.


      NOTE
      See the list of DTC at the bottom of this page.


      NOTE
      If every sensor is normal, a normal code is output (A cycle of 0.25 sec. ON and 0.25 sec. OFF is repeated).


      NOTE
      If 2 or more malfunction are indicated at the same time, the lowest numbered code will be displayed 1st.



      Turn the ignition switch OFF.
       
      Using SST (SST 09843 - 18020), connect terminals Ts and E1 of DLC1.
       
      Start the engine.
       
      Check that the ABS warning light blinks.
       



      Keep the vehicle in the stationary condition on the flat place for 1 sec. or more.
       
      Leaving the vehicle in the stationary condition and the brake pedal in free condition for 1 sec. or more, continue to depress the brake pedal with 33 lbf (147 N) or more for 1 sec. or more.
       
      Leaving the vehicle in the stationary condition, depress the brake pedal with 22 lbf (98 N) or more quickly.
       



      Drive vehicle straight forward. When driving the vehicle with the speed faster than 45 km/h (28 mph) for serveral seconds, check that the ABS warning light comes off.
       



      Stop the vehicle.
       
      Using SST (SST 09843 - 18020), connect terminals Tc and E1 of DLC1.
       
      Read the number of blinks of the ABS warning light.
       



      After doing the check, disconnect terminals Ts and E1, Tc and E1 of DLC1, and ignition switch turned OFF.

    3. In case of using LEXUS hand-held tester:Check the sensor signal.

      Hook up the LEXUS hand-held tester to the DLC3.
       
      Do step (3) - (9) on the previous page.
       
      Read the DTC by following the prompts on the tester screen.

With Air Suspension

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1993-1994

  1. Remove the rear seat cushion and seat back.
  2.  
  3. Remove the rear scuff plates, roof side inner trim panel and speaker panel.
  4.  
  5. Remove the trunk trim panel. Move the height control switch, located in the trunk area to the OFF position.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the stabilizer links from the stabilizer bar.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect and support the brake caliper, using a piece of wire. Do not disconnect the brake line.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the height control sensor link from the suspension arm.
  16.  
  17. Remove the nut on the lower side of the shock absorber. Do not remove the bolt.
  18.  
  19. Support the rear axle assembly with a lifting device.
  20.  
  21. Remove the grommet and disconnect the air tube from the shock absorber.
  22.  
  23. Remove the mounting bolts and actuator cover.
  24.  
  25. Remove the mounting bolts and actuator.
  26.  
  27. Remove the upper mounting nuts and lower the rear axle assembly.
  28.  
  29. Remove the bolt on the lower side of the shock absorber.
  30.  
  31. Remove the shock absorber.
  32.  

To install:

  1. If discarding the pneumatic cylinder, perform the following:
    1. Using a screwdriver, depressurize the air from inside the cylinder.
    2.  
    3. Drill a hole in the shaded area shown in the illustration and remove the gas inside.
      NOTE
      The gas coming out is harmless, but be careful of chips which may fly up when drilling.

  3. Install the shock to the vehicle and tighten the upper mounting nuts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Match the holes in the pneumatic cylinder with the holes in the suspension control actuator.

  7. Install the actuator and replace the actuator cover. Tighten the mounting nuts to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install new O-rings and connect the air line to the shock absorber. Tighten the fitting to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the shock to the rear axle carrier. Insert the bolt from the vehicle's rear and temporarily tighten the nut.
  12.  
  13. Connect the height control sensor link to suspension arm and tighten to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the rear brake caliper to the rear axle carrier and tighten the mounting bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Connect the stabilizer links and tighten to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Stabilize the suspension by:
    1. Install the tire and wheel assembly and lower the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Move the height control switch to the on position. Start the engine an fill the pneumatic cylinder with air.
    4.  
    5. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to stabilize the suspension.
    6.

  21. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  22.  
  23. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  24.  
  25. Support the rear axle carrier with a lifting device. Tighten the lower shock bolt to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
  26.  
  27. Replace the tire and wheel assembly.
  28.  
  29. Lower the vehicle.
  30.  
  31. Install the rear seat cushion and seat back.
  32.  
  33. Replace the rear scuff plates, the roof side inner trim panel and speaker panel.
  34.  
  35. Install the trunk trim panel.
  36.  
  37. Check the wheel alignment.

Lexus LS400 1995-1997

  1. Remove the rear seat cushion and seat back.
  2.  
  3. Remove the package tray trim.
  4.  
  5. Remove the trunk trim panel. Move the height control switch, located in the trunk area, to the OFF position.
  6.  
  7. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  8.  
  9. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  10.  
  11. Bleed the air system from the suspension.
  12.  
  13. Remove the rear halfshaft.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the stabilizer links from the stabilizer bar.
  16.  
  17. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor and wire harness.
  18.  
  19. Disconnect the brake caliper bracket from the rear axle carrier. Support the caliper using a piece of wire. Do not disconnect the brake line.
  20.  
  21. Place matchmarks on the height control sensor link and bracket. Disconnect the height control sensor link from the No. 1 lower control arm.
  22.  
  23. Remove the nut on the lower side of the shock absorber. Do not remove the bolt.
  24.  
  25. Support the rear axle assembly with a lifting device.
  26.  
  27. Remove the grommet and disconnect the air tube from the shock absorber.
  28.  
  29. Remove the actuator cover from the strut tower by removing the three nuts.
  30.  
  31. Disconnect the actuator electrical connector from the top of the strut.
  32.  
  33. Remove the actuator by removing the two nuts.
  34.  
  35. Remove the three upper mounting nuts holding the strut to the strut tower.
  36.  
  37. Lower the rear axle assembly.
  38.  
  39. Remove the bolt on the lower side of the shock absorber.
  40.  
  41. Remove the pneumatic cylinder strut assembly from the vehicle.
  42.  
  43. Remove the suspension support from the strut assembly by removing the three nuts.
  44.  

To install:

  1. If discarding the pneumatic cylinder, perform the following:
    1. Using a screwdriver, depressurize the air from inside the cylinder.
    2.  
    3. Drill a hole in the shaded area shown in the illustration and remove the gas inside.
      NOTE
      The gas coming out is harmless, but be careful of chips which may fly up when drilling.

  3. Install the suspension support to the pneumatic cylinder (strut) and torque the nuts to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
  4.  
  5. Install the strut assembly to the vehicle and tighten the upper mounting nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Match the holes in the pneumatic cylinder with the holes in the suspension control actuator.
  8.  
  9. Install the actuator and torque the mounting nuts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
  10.  
  11. Install the actuator cover and torque the three nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  12.  
  13. Install new O-rings and connect the air line to the shock absorber. Tighten the fitting to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
  14.  
  15. Install the strut to the rear axle carrier. Insert the bolt from the vehicle's rear and temporarily tighten the nut.
  16.  
  17. Align the matchmarks and connect the height control sensor link to the No. 1 lower control arm. Torque the mounting nut to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the rear brake caliper to the rear axle carrier and tighten the mounting bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the ABS speed sensor and wire harness.
  22.  
  23. Connect the stabilizer bar link and tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the halfshaft.
  26.  
  27. Connect the actuator electrical connector to the top of the strut.
  28.  
  29. Stabilize the suspension by:
    1. Install the tire and lower the vehicle.
    2.  
    3. Move the height control switch to the ON position. Start the engine an fill the pneumatic cylinder with air.
    4.  
    5. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to stabilize the suspension.
    6.  

  30.  
  31. Turn the suspension height control to the OFF position.
  32.  
  33. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  34.  
  35. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  36.  
  37. Support the rear axle carrier with a lifting device. Tighten the lower strut bolt to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
  38.  
  39. Replace the tire and wheel assembly.
  40.  
  41. Lower the vehicle.
  42.  
  43. Install the package tray trim.
  44.  
  45. Install the rear seat cushion and seat back.
  46.  
  47. Turn the suspension control switch to the ON position.
  48.  
  49. Check the wheel alignment.
  50.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2.  
  3. Bleed the air system from the suspension.
  4.  
  5. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Rear seat cushion and seat back
     
    Package tray trim
     
    Trunk trim panel. Move the height control switch, located in the trunk area, to the OFF position.
     
    Tire and wheel assembly
     
    Rear halfshaft
     
    Stabilizer links from the stabilizer bar
     
    Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor and wiring harness
     
    Brake caliper bracket from the rear axle carrier. Do not disconnect the brake line.
     

  6.  
  7. Place matchmarks on the height control sensor link and bracket. Disconnect the height control sensor link from the No. 1 lower control arm.
  8.  
  9. Support the rear axle assembly with a lifting device.
  10.  
  11. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Nut on the lower side of the shock absorber. Do not remove the bolt.
     
    Grommet and disconnect the air tube from the shock absorber.
     
    Actuator cover from the strut tower by removing the 3 nuts.
     
    Actuator electrical connector from the top of the strut.
     
    Actuator by removing the 2 nuts
     
    3 upper mounting nuts holding the strut to the strut tower.
     

  12.  
  13. Lower the rear axle assembly
  14.  
  15. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Bolt on the lower side of the shock absorber.
     
    Pneumatic cylinder strut assembly from the vehicle.
     
    Suspension support from the strut assembly by removing the 3 nuts.
     

  16.  
  17. If discarding the pneumatic cylinder, perform the following:
    1. Using a screwdriver, depressurize the air from inside the cylinder.
    2.  
    3. Drill a hole in the shaded area shown in the illustration and remove the gas inside.
      CAUTION
      The gas coming out is harmless, but be careful of chips which may fly up when drilling.

    4.  

  18.  

To install:

  1. Install or connect the following:

    Suspension support to the pneumatic cylinder (strut) and tighten the nuts to 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm).
     
    Strut assembly to the vehicle and tighten the upper mounting nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
     

  2.  
  3. Match the holes in the pneumatic cylinder with the holes in the suspension control actuator.
  4.  
  5. Install or connect the following:

    Actuator and tighten the mounting nuts to 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm).
     
    Actuator cover and tighten the 3 nuts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
     
    New O-rings and connect the air line to the shock absorber. Tighten the fitting to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).
     
    Strut to the rear axle carrier. Insert the bolt from the vehicle's rear and temporarily tighten the nut.
     
    Height control sensor link to the No. 1 lower control arm. Mounting nut: 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
     
    Rear brake caliper to the rear axle carrier and tighten the mounting bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
     
    ABS speed sensor and wiring harness.
     
    Stabilizer bar link and tighten the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
     
    The halfshaft
     
    Actuator electrical connector to the top of the strut.
     
    Tire
     

  6.  
  7. Move the height control switch to the ON position. Start the engine and fill the pneumatic cylinder with air.
  8.  
  9. Bounce the vehicle up and down several times to stabilize the suspension.
  10.  
  11. Turn the suspension height control to the OFF position.
  12.  
  13. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  14.  
  15. Support the rear axle carrier with a lifting device. Tighten the lower strut bolt to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
  16.  
  17. Install or connect the following:

    Package tray trim
     
    Rear seat cushion and seat back
     

  18.  
  19. Turn the suspension control switch to the ON position.
  20.  
  21. Check the wheel alignment.
  22.  

Without Air Suspension

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1993-1996

  1. Remove the rear seat cushion and seat back.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tray trim.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. Remove the rear halfshaft.
  10.  
  11. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the stabilizer bar.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the ABS speed sensor and wire harness.
  14.  
  15. Disconnect the brake caliper bracket from the axle carrier, leaving the brake line connected. Suspend the brake caliper aside with a piece of wire.
  16.  
  17. Remove the nut on the lower side of the strut. Do not remove the bolt.
  18.  
  19. Support the rear axle assembly with a lifting device.
  20.  
  21. Remove the strut cap by removing the three nuts.
  22.  
  23. Remove the three mounting nuts holding the strut assembly to the strut tower. Do not remove the center bolt.
    CAUTION
    Do not remove the center nut to the strut at this time. The spring on the strut is under high pressure and can cause serious injury or vehicle damage.

  25. Lower the rear axle assembly and remove the bolt on the lower side of the strut assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the strut assembly with the coil spring.
  28.  
  29. Using compressor 09727-30020 or equivalent, compress the coil spring.
  30.  
  31. Secure the strut housing in a vice.
  32.  
  33. Remove the strut rod retaining nut.
  34.  
  35. Remove the upper suspension support, upper insulator, coil spring, spring bumper and the lower insulator.
  36.  

To install:

  1. If discarding the strut, perform the following:
    1. Fully extend the strut rod.
    2.  
    3. Drill a hole in the strut (about 1 inch above the strut lower mount) and drain the gas inside
      NOTE
      The gas coming out is harmless, but be careful of chips which may fly up while drilling.

    4.

  3. Install the lower insulator to the strut.
  4.  
  5. Install the spring bumper to the strut piston rod.
  6.  
  7. Install the (compressed) coil spring.
  8.  
  9. Position the coil spring with the end butted against the gap in the lower seat.
  10.  
  11. Install the upper insulator and support. Match the bolt of the support with the cut off part of the insulator.
  12.  
  13. Install the upper suspension support.
  14.  
  15. Temporarily install the upper strut rod retaining nut.
  16.  
  17. Rotate the suspension support so that the rod and one of the bolts on the suspension support are aligned with the lower bushing.
  18.  
  19. Remove the spring compressor.
  20.  
  21. Install the strut assembly to the vehicle and tighten the three nuts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  22.  
  23. Tighten the strut rod retaining nut to 20 ft. lbs. (27 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the strut assembly cap and install the three nuts.
  26.  
  27. Install the strut to the rear axle carrier. Install the bolt from the rear of the vehicle and temporarily tighten the nut.
  28.  
  29. Install the brake caliper and tighten the mounting bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
  30.  
  31. Install the ABS speed sensor and wire harness.
  32.  
  33. Connect the stabilizer link to the stabilizer bar and torque the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
  34.  
  35. Install the rear halfshaft.
  36.  
  37. Replace the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle.
  38.  
  39. Bounce the vehicle up and down to stabilize the suspension.
  40.  
  41. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  42.  
  43. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  44.  
  45. Support the rear axle assembly with a lifting device. Tighten the lower strut bolt to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
  46.  
  47. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  48.  
  49. Lower the vehicle.
  50.  
  51. Install the rear seat cushion and rear seat back.
  52.  
  53. Install the package tray trim.
  54.  
  55. Check the wheel alignment.
  56.
