Upper Control Arms

Removal & Installation



Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1993-1994

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2.  
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4.  
  5. Remove the rear axle carrier with the upper arm assembly.
  6.  
  7. Install the axle carrier in a suitable holding fixture.
  8.  
  9. Disconnect the upper control arm from the axle carrier.
  10.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm and torque the bolts to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm).
  2.  
  3. Install the axle carrier.
  4.  
  5. Install the wheel.
  6.  
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8.  

Specific to:

Lexus LS400 1995-1997

  1. If equipped with air suspension, move the height control switch in the trunk area to the OFF position.
  2.  
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
  4.  
  5. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  6.  
  7. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly.
  8.  
  9. If equipped with height control suspension, matchmark and disconnect the height control sensor link from the lower control arm by removing the nut.
  10.  
  11. Remove the ABS speed sensor and wire harness.
  12.  
  13. Disconnect the brake caliper bracket from the rear axle carrier by removing the two bolts. Support the caliper with a piece of wire. Do not allow the caliper to hang freely from the brake hose.
  14.  
  15. Place matchmarks on the disc brake rotor and the axle hub. Remove the brake rotor.
  16.  
  17. Remove the parking brake shoes and the cable.
  18.  
  19. Remove the halfshaft as follows:
    1. Remove the cotter pin, lock cap and the nut holding the halfshaft to the rear axle.
    2.  
    3. Remove the suspension member brace by removing the two bolts.
    4.  
    5. Place matchmarks on the halfshaft and the side gear shaft. Remove the hexagon bolts and washers with the proper tool.
    6.  
    7. Hold the inboard joint side of the halfshaft so the outboard joint side does not bend too much. Tap the end of the halfshaft with a rubber mallet and disengage the axle hub.
    8.  
    9. Remove the halfshaft from the vehicle.
    10.

  21. Remove the strut rod as follows:
    1. Remove the nut and bolt and disconnect the strut rod from the rear axle carrier.
    2.  
    3. Remove the nut, bolt and the strut rod from the body.
    4.  
    5. Remove the strut rod.
    6.

  23. Remove the lower control arms as follows:
    1. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body for the No. 1 control arm. Remove the nut and adjusting cam.
    2.  
    3. Remove the nut on the axle carrier side of the No. 1 lower control arm.
    4.  
    5. Using a tie rod removal tool, remove the No. 1 lower control arm.
    6.  
    7. Disconnect the stabilizer bar link from the No. 2 lower control arm.
    8.  
    9. Place matchmarks on the adjusting cam and body. Remove the nut and adjusting cam from the No. 2 lower control arm.
    10.  
    11. Remove the nut and bolt holding the No. 2 lower control arm to the axle carrier.
    12.  
    13. Remove the No. 2 control arm from the vehicle.
    14.

  25. Remove the nut and bolt on the lower side of the strut assembly.
  26.  
  27. Remove the two upper control arm set nuts and bolts.
  28.  
  29. Remove the axle carrier with the upper control arm.
  30.  
  31. Secure the axle carrier in a vise.
  32.  
  33. Remove the nut holding the upper control arm to the axle carrier and remove the control arm.
  34.  

To install:

  1. Install the upper control arm to the axle carrier with the nut. Torque the nut to 80 ft. lbs. (108 Nm),
  2.  
  3. Install the axle carrier and upper control arm to the vehicle as an assembly.
  4.  
  5. Install the two upper control arm set bolts and torque the bolts to 121 ft. lbs. (164 Nm).
  6.  
  7. Install the bolt and nut holding the strut to the axle carrier. Torque to 101 ft. lbs. (137 Nm).
  8.  
  9. Install the lower control arms as follows:
    1. Install the bolt and nut connecting the No. 2 lower control arm to the axle carrier. Torque the bolt to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the nut and adjusting cam to hold the No. 2 lower control arm to the body. Align the adjusting cam matchmarks and torque the nut to 57 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the stabilizer bar link to the No. 2 lower control arm and torque the nut to 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the No. 1 lower control arm to the axle carrier and body. Install the nut to hold the No. 1 lower control arm to the axle carrier. Torque the nut to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the nut and adjusting cam to hold the No. 1 lower control arm to the body. Align the matchmarks and torque the nut to 57 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
    10.

  11. Install the strut rod as follows:
    1. Install the strut rod to the axle carrier and body. Install the bolt and nut to hold the strut rod to the body. Torque to 57 ft. lbs. (78 Nm).
    2.  
    3. With the strut connected to the axle carrier, install the bolt and nut to hold the strut rod to the axle carrier. Torque to 136 ft. lbs. (184 Nm)
    4.

  13. Install the parking brake shoes and the cable.
  14.  
  15. Install the halfshaft to the vehicle as follows:
    1. Insert the outboard joint side of the halfshaft and align the matchmarks on the side gear shaft and the halfshaft.
    2.  
    3. Coat the threads with clean oil and install the hexagon bolts. Torque bolts to 61 ft. lbs. (83 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the suspension member brace with the two bolts. Torque the two bolts to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the nut to hold the halfshaft to the rear axle. Torque the nut to 213 ft. lbs. (289 Nm).
    8.  
    9. Install the lock cap and cotter pin.
    10.

  17. Install the brake rotor to the axle hub with the matchmarks aligned. Install the two screws and torque the screws to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  18.  
  19. Install the brake caliper to the vehicle and install the two bolts. Torque the bolts to 77 ft. lbs. (104 Nm).
  20.  
  21. Install the ABS speed sensor and wire harness.
  22.  
  23. Install the height control sensor link with the matchmarks aligned. Torque the nut to 48 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
  24.  
  25. Install the rear wheel.
  26.  
  27. Lower the vehicle and turn ON the air suspension switch.
  28.
