CAUTION
Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the -LOCK- position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery.


NOTE
If the wiring connector of the supplemental restraint system is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, diagnostic trouble codes will be recorded.

  1. Remove the steering wheel pad.
    1. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal.
    2.  
    3. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
    4.  
    5. Using a TORX® wrench, loosen the 4 screws. TORX® wrench: T30 (Part No.09042-00010 or locally manufactured tool)
    6.  
    7. Loosen the TORX® screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    8.  
    9. Pull the wheel pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
      NOTE
      When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.


      CAUTION
      When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.

  3. Remove the steering wheel.
    1. Disconnect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Remove the set nut.
    4.  
    5. Using SST- SST 09213-31021, remove the steering wheel.

To install:

  1. Install the steering wheel and wheel pad.
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Center the spiral cable.
    4.

  3. Install the steering wheel and torque the set nut. Tighten nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    1. Connect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the TORX® screws is caught on the screw case.
    4.  
    5. Using a TORX® wrench, tighten the 4 screws. Tighten screws to 64 inch lbs. (7.4 Nm).
      NOTE
      Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.


      NOTE
      If the wheel pad has been dropped, of there are cracks, dents in the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.


      NOTE
      When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfare with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

Lexus LS400 1995-1996


CAUTION
Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the -LOCK- position and the negative (-) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery with the telescopic steering pulled out.

  1. Remove the steering wheel pad.
    NOTE
    If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.


    NOTE
    Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new parts.

    1. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Remove the steering wheel lower No.2 and No.3 covers.
    4.  
    5. Using a TORX® socket wrench, loosen the 2 TORX® screws. Loosen the 2 screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    6.  
    7. Pull out the wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
      CAUTION
      When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.


      CAUTION
      Never disassemble the wheel pad.


      NOTE
      When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

  3. Remove the steering wheel.
    1. Disconnect the connector.
    2.  
    3. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
    4.  
    5. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft.
    6.  
    7. Using SST, remove the wheel. SST 09950-50010 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05020)
    8.

  5. Remove the No. 1 instrument panel under cover.
    1. Remove the 2 cover set screws.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the 2 connectors and DLC2.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the DLC3.
    6.

  7. Remove the instrument panel end pad and instrument panel finish plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the No. 1 Instrument panel safety pad.
    1. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the engine hood release lever from the pad.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 4 pad set bolts.
    4.

  11. Remove the No. 2 heater to register duct.
  12.  
  13. Remove the upper and lower column covers.
    1. Remove the 3 screws.
    2.  

  14.  
  15. Remove the combination switch with spiral cable.
    1. Disconnect the 2 connectors.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the airbag connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 3 screws.
    6.

  17. Remove the spiral cable.
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.

  19. Disconnect the sliding yoke.
    1. Place matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
    2.  
    3. Loosen top bolt and remove bottom bolt.
    4.

  21. Remove the sliding yoke.
    1. Remove the top bolt.
    2.  

  22.  
  23. Remove the steering column assembly.
    1. Disconnect the 3 connectors.
    2.  
    3. Remove the return spring.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts.

To install:

  1. Install the steering column assembly.
    1. Tighten the 4 column assembly set nuts. Tighten nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    2.  
    3. Install the return spring.
    4.  
    5. Connect the 3 connectors.
    6.

  3. Install the sliding yoke.
    1. Temporarily tighten the top bolt.
    2.

  5. Connect the sliding yoke.
    1. Align the matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
    2.  
    3. Torque the bottom bolt. Tighten bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Torque the top bolt. Tighten bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    6.

  7. Install the spiral cable.
  8.  
  9. Install the combination switch with spiral cable.
    1. Tighten the 3 screws.
    2.  
    3. Connect the airbag connector.
    4.  
    5. Connect the 2 connectors.
    6.

  11. Install the upper and lower column covers. Tighten the 3 screws.
  12.  
  13. Install the No. 2 heater to register duct.
  14.  
  15. Install the No. 1 safety pad.
    1. Tighten the 4 panel set bolts.
    2.  
    3. Connect the engine hood release lever and tighten the 2 screws to the pad.
    4.

  17. Install the end of pad and finish plate.
  18.  
  19. Install the No. 1 Instrument panel under cover.
    1. Tighten the 2 cover set screws.
    2.  
    3. Connect the DLC3 with 2 screws.
    4.  
    5. Connect the 2 connectors and DLC2.
    6.

  21. Center spiral cable.
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn the cable.
    4.  
    5. Then rotate the cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the mark. The cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to either left or right of the center.
    6.

  23. Install the steering wheel.
    1. Align the matchmarks on the wheel and main shaft.
    2.  
    3. Torque the wheel set nut. Tighten nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Connect the connector.
    6.

  25. Install the steering wheel pad.
    NOTE
    Make sure the wheel pad is installed to the specified torque.


    NOTE
    If the wheel pad has been dropped, or there are cracks, dents or other defects on the case or connector, replace the wheel pad with a new one.


    NOTE
    When installing the wheel pad, take care that the wirings do not interfere with other parts and are not pinched between other parts.

    1. Connect the airbag connector.
    2.  
    3. Install the wheel pad after confirming that the circumference groove of the TORX® screws is caught on the screw case.
    4.  
    5. Using a TORX® socket wrench, torque the 2 screws. Tighten screws to 78 inch lbs. (8.8 Nm).
    6.  
    7. Install the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers.

Lexus LS400 1997-1999

  1. Remove the steering wheel pad.
    NOTE
    If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.

    1. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Remove the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers.
    4.  
    5. Using a TORX® socket wrench, loosen the 2 TORX® screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case.
    6.  
    7. Pull out the wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector.
    8.  
    9. Disconnect the connector.
      CAUTION
      When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward.


      CAUTION
      Never disassemble the wheel pad.


      NOTE
      When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag wire harness.

  3. Remove the steering wheel.
    1. Disconnect the connectors.

    3. Remove the steering wheel set nut.
    4.  
    5. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.

  5. Remove the No. 1 under cover.
    1. Remove the 2 screws and No. 1 under cover.

    3. Disconnect the 2 connectors and DLC 2.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 2 screws and DLC3.

  7. Remove the end pad and finish plate.
  8.  
  9. Remove the No. 1 safety pad.
    1. Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the engine hood release lever.
    2.  
    3. Remove the 4 pad set bolts and No. 1 safety pad.

  11. Remove No. 2 heater to register duct.
  12.  
  13. Remove the column upper and lower covers.
    1. Remove the 3 screws, column upper and lower covers.
    2.

  15. Remove the combination switch with spiral cable.
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the airbag connector.
    4.  
    5. Remove the 3 screws and combination switch with spiral cable.
    6.

  17. Remove the spiral cable..
    NOTE
    Do not disassemble the cable or apply oil to it.

  19. Disconnect the sliding yoke.
    1. Place matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
    2.  
    3. Loosen the top bolt and remove the bottom bolt.
    4.

  21. Remove the steering column assembly.
    1. Disconnect the connectors.
    2.  
    3. Disconnect the No. 2 column hole cover.
    4.  
    5. Loosen the clamp.
    6.  
    7. Remove the return spring.
    8.  
    9. Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts and steering column assembly.
    10.  
    11. Remove the No. 2 column hole cover and clamp from the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.

  23. Remove the sliding yoke.
    1. Remove the top bolt and sliding yoke.
    2.

  25. Remove the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
    1. Place matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and main shaft assembly.
    2.  
    3. Remove the bolt and No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.

To install:

  1. Install No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
    1. Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly and main shaft assembly.
    2.  
    3. Install the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly with the bolt. Tighten the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    4.

  3. Install the sliding yoke.
    1. Temporarily install the sliding yoke with the top bolt.
    2.

  5. Install the steering column assembly.
    1. Install the No. 2 column hole cover and clamp to the No. 2 intermediate shaft assembly.
    2.  
    3. Install the steering column assembly with the 4 column assembly set nuts. Tighten the nuts to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Install the return spring.
    6.  
    7. Tighten the clamp.
    8.  
    9. Connect the No. 2 column hole cover.
    10.  
    11. Connect the connectors.
    12.

  7. Connect the sliding yoke.
    1. Align the matchmarks on the sliding yoke and control valve shaft.
    2.  
    3. Install the bottom bolt. Tighten the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    4.  
    5. Tighten the top bolt. Tighten the bolt to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).
    6.

  9. Install the spiral cable..
  10.  
  11. Install the combination switch with spiral cable.
    1. Install the combination switch with spiral cable with the 3screws.
    2.  
    3. Connect the airbag connector.
    4.  
    5. Connect the connectors.

  13. Install the column upper and lower covers with the 3 screws.
  14.  
  15. Install the No. 2 heater to register duct.
  16.  
  17. Install the No. 1 safety pad.
    1. Install the No. 1 safety pad with the 4 pad set bolts.
    2.  
    3. Connect the engine hood release lever with the 2 screws.
    4.

  19. Install the end pad and finish plate.
  20.  
  21. Install the No. 1 under cover.
    1. Connect the DLC3 with the 2 screws.
    2.  
    3. Connect the 2 connectors and DLC2.
    4.  
    5. Install the No. 1 under cover with the 2 screws.

  23. Center spiral cable.
    1. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.
    2.  
    3. Turn the cable counterclockwise by hand until it becomes harder to turn.
    4.  
    5. Then rotate the cable clockwise about 2.5 turns to align the marks.The cable will rotate about 2.5 turns to either left or right of the center.
    6.

  25. Install the steering wheel.

  27. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly.
    1. Install the steering wheel set nut. Tighten the nut to 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm).

    3. Connect the connectors.

  29. Install the steering wheel pad.
    NOTE
    Never use airbag parts from another vehicle. When replacing parts, replace with new ones.
